Hi Jeffrey,
You may be able to find original pieces on eBay. I've seen whole sets (board
and pieces) go fairly cheap.
Best regards,
Brent

Dear William,
Thanks for the welcome message!
[Sorry this is so delayed, I never got the email of the this message; Yahoo!
groups emails have been a bit flaky for me lately - bad luck.]
I understand what you're saying, that any chess board will do.
What I really meant is that I have an old (1970's) Chess^3 3D chess board that
has a 2" king and approximately 1" squares, and I was wondering if anyone knew
where I could buy replacement chess pieces for *this* chess board?
I found 2 1/2" king (cheap) plastic chess pieces at chesshouse.com, but I fear
even they will be too big for my Chess^3 chess board.
Does anyone know where I can buy cheap 2" king (< 1" base) chess pieces? I would
be greatly appreciative.
Sincerely,
--

Hi Jeffery,
Welcome to the Millennium 3D Chess group*. This is in response to your question
if a Chess^3 (i.e., Chess Cube) is the right "size" to play Millennium 3D
Chess*.
The only criteria is that you have three 8 by 8 chess boards. The physical size
of the board or squares is not important. Just like traditional chess, you
could play a 2D chess game on a small travel board or on a full-size tournament
board, and it wouldn't matter.
However, the only real "issue" is that you and your opponent can easily reach in
between boards to move a piece without knocking over the rest of the board.
Personally, I use a "Strato Chess" 3D chess board to play my Millennium 3d
Chess* games as well as to log the chess games using a spreadsheet on my
cumputer with three 8 by 8 grids and chess fonts. The Strato Chess board could
be bigger, but I can easily move the chess pieces with just-a-little-care while
reaching into the middle board. This follows the old rule, "if the shoe [board]
fits, wear [play] it!"
About playing an email game of Millennium 3D Chess*, yes, I will be happy to
play an email game. Would you like to play White or Black?
Also, there is a library of previous Millennium 3D Chess* games on my web site
if you're interesting in learning strategies of others:

To other readers on this list: I will be happy to play additional email games

Hello, all!
I am not sure if anyone is listening to this list anymore, but, if you
are, greetings and salutations!
I have had a Chess^3 ("Chess Cubed") set since I was a kid, but I have
never played Millennium Chess. Are Chess^3 and Millennium Chess sized
the same? I just measured my Chess^3 set, and it appears to have 1"
squares and 2 1/8" kings. Does anyone know where I can get 2 1/8" king
sized replacement pieces? The shortest I have found are 2 1/2" kings.
Will these be too big to fit on the 1" squares? Let me know what your
experiences are.
Also, let me know if anyone is up for a play-by-email game of either
Chess^3 rules or Millennium Chess rules game (or both :)). I have a .pdf
scanned in copy oan>f the rules for Chess^3, if anyone is interested. I
tried joining the Chess Club at my University (I am a returning math
grad student) but they are all too good; I lost every match decisively
and didn't learn much from any of the losses. I am hoping that since
Millennium Chess is such a novelty, I can get some opponents at my level
and can have some interesting games.
Thanks for reading, and I hope to hear from someone soon.
Sincerely,

sorry, I don't do computer generated chess games, I am working to bring an
invention to market, a table top 3d chess set-- not a variant, and not a game;
but a device on which chess, 3d chess and it's variants can be played.

This was my first game of 3D chess, and I speculated before the game
that some of the standard chess principles might not hold up in 3D.
Specifically, I wondered the following:
1) Should rooks stay on the sidelines in 3D chess? One reason rooks
survive until the endgame in a normal chess match is because they are
such a pain to move around. There is a lot more space in 3D, so I
thought getting the rooks out early might be effective.
2) Is controlling the center really that important? The most direct
assault against the black pieces seemed to be on the 3rd board. I was
not convinced of the importance of controlling the center board.
3) Can black really withstand an early assault by white? I was
curious if white's first-move advantage was greater in 3D chess, again
because there are so many more options. I suspected that black might
be hard pressed to defend against a determined attack.
In this game, Wil schooled me on all 3 of my questions. I believe I
lost by not following good chess principles, and this game is
instructive for that reason. I will take you through the game from my
perspective - I'm no chess master, but I think I can effectively
demonstrate what was happening in this game. I'd love to hear
analysis from anyone else who wants to critique the game. I am white.
1. N2g3
I had looked carefully at the squares before the game, and determined
that 2f7 and 3f7 are the weakest squares for black. In normal chess,
a good black player can easily fend off a white attack against f7. Is
this true in 3D chess as well? My plan is to get the knight to 3g5,
which will aid the queen and rooks in their assault.
1. ..B2b7
2. Q3f3
I didn't really think that the queen would be effective on this
square. My plan is to get her to 1h5. I was surprised by black's
next move.
2. ..B3c6
Attacking the queen. Black wants to stop this attack before it even
starts. But I was already on my way to a different square.
3. Q1h5 2g6
Another surprise. Moving pawns seemed to be a little questionable to
me, because the king's safety can be easily compromised with so much
space to get at him. But black's pawn move turns out to be very
effective throughout the game. I have no choice but to move the queen
again.
4. Q1h7 R1c8
5. N3g5 N3h6
Black's move defends the 3f7 square, and attacks the queen yet again.
At this point, it's impossible to keep up the attack.
6. Q1d3 B3g7
7. R3a3 R1d8
It is painfully obvious by now that my queen's exposure is preventing
any white development. But I was still determined to get something
rolling with the heavy artillery.
8. Q2e3 2f6
9. N2g7?
Here is my first major blunder. I was still hanging on to the idea
that my knight and queen could effectively get something going
underneath black's king. I saw that black's rook could harrass the
knight, but I failed to see black's correct response.
9. ..Q2d7
Winning the knight.
10. Rx3a7 Qx2g7
11. R2a7
And in attacking the queen, I have a mating idea which black can
easily stop. If black were to foolishly move the queen out of harm's
way, white wins with 12. Q2e7++
11. ..R2d7
12. R2a8 N1c8
My threat was 13. Q2e8++. I was expecting black to block the rook
with either the knight or the rook, and I was confused by the knight
move at first. But 12. ..N1c8 cleverly attacks my rook and defends
the 2e8 square simultaneously.
13. R3a8+ N3d8
14. R2g1
My second major blunder. I studied the board carefully before this
move, trying to decide if I could get away with having the queen and
rook on the same diagonal for a move. I desperately needed some
reinforcements, and I concluded that 2g1 would give my rook the most
mobility between the 2nd and 3rd board. But black found a way to
exploit my carelessness.
14. ..B3c3+!
15. 2d2 B2d4
And now my knight deficit has turned into a rook deficit. In a normal
2D game, I could have resigned here. But I believed that a draw was
still possible in this game, so I continued.
16. Q2g3 Bx2g1
17. Qx2g1 Q1h7
18. N1a3 R1h8
19. B1f4 N2h4
And here, the black knight is attacking my bishop. I wasn't sure what
black was trying to accomplish on that side of the board. I opted to
get the bishop into the game on the queen side, hopefully to help my
rook take the pinned knight on 3d8, and I let my pawn on 1h2 go.
20. B1e3 Qx1h2
21. Q2e1 N2f5
22. B1b6 2c7
23. B3d4 R12h7
24. Q3e1
Another blunder, giving black's knight a fork.
24. ..N3f3
25. Q3a1 N1g1
Here I was worried about black's rook moving to 1h1, winning my bishop
and allowing black's queen to attack my king. My knight went to 2c3,
and would enter 1e3 to guard the bishop on the following move. But it
turned out I had bigger problems.
26. N2c3 Nx3d4
27. Qx3d4? Q3e1+!
28. K1d1 Qx2d2++
And there you have it. I had set up a similar mate earlier in the
game, and I completely missed this one. I blundered several times
during this game, but a lot of my problems stemmed from getting the
heavy pieces out early, which kept me from developing because I was
continually harrassed by black's forces. My assault on the f7 sqaures
never got off the ground. And my lack of respect for the middle board
cost me a lot of space that made it difficult to move. Black's pawns
at 2f6 and 2g6 kept my queen out of where she wanted to be.
I learned a lot from this game, and I hope it was instructive to
others. I would appreciate any opinions or analysis on this game.
Hi Everyone,
Below is another completed Millennium 3D Chess* game.
It was a pretty exciting game as White was
setting-up a lot of pressure on Black's King, but
Black offered a seemingly harmless trade which pulled
White's Queen of his back rank allowing Black to
spring a trap with mate in two.
In addition, I have added this game to the 3D Chess

I have one just like that. The pieces have to be
quite short or you can't move them on the center and
lower board. The ones that originally came with it
were MUCH too large.
The rules, basically a 3d expansion of regular chess
rules were completely un-playable. The best anyone
could hope for in most cases was a long battle of
attrition.

Hello Group;
I noticed this board my self. But if you look the square do not seem to line up
the same as a normal chess board. The corners are mixed up. From top to bottom
they go dark light.

Subject: [Millennium_3D_Chess] Strato 3D (3x8x8) Chess Board at Amazon.com
Hi Everyone,
One of our Millennium 3D Chess* members, Stephen, just
emailed me and said that Amazon.com is carrying a
3x8x8 3D chess board called "Strato Chess".
Just go to Amazon.com and search for "Strato Chess".
This is not an endorsement of this product, however, I
have received 20+ requests from other list members
searching for a source of new 3D chess boards.
If anyone knows of any other 3D chess board
manufactures, then please post it here to this list.
Also, if anyone does purchase the Strato Chess board
from Amazon, then please post your comments to this
list.
Thanks!
Will

I've been doing some analysis to see if standard chess endgame theory
holds up in three dimensions. The first test is the white king and
queen vs. the black king. This is an easy win for white normally. Is
it so easy here?
I have the following three pieces:
White king on 1f3
Black king on 2e5
White queen on 3a3
White to move. White will dominate the center board through use of
the king, and force black to the outside. Can black's king escape?
Note that the white king, placed in the center, controls a cube of
squares around him. This is very difficult for the black king to
circumvent, no matter which board he is placed on.
1. K2e3 K3f5
2. Q3e3 K2e5
3. Q2e4+ K1d6
4. K2d4 K1c6
5. Q1d5+
My strategy is to use the queen in the more traditional role of roping
off squares for the black king. It is easiest to keep her off of the
center board, so she doesn't hinder the white king. The white king
moves his cube of influence closer and closer using the center board,
pinning in the black king.
5. ... K2c7
6. K2d5 K3b6
7. Q2c5+ K3c7
8. Q3c6+ K2d8
9. K2e6 K2c8
Black's only other legal moves are to 1d8 or 3d8. Both are met by 10.
Q2d7++. The white squares are all guarded by white's queen.
10. K2d6 K1b8
11. K2c6 K1a7
12. Q2b7++
King vs. King and Queen can be forced to checkmate.
Hi Everyone,
One of our newer members of our Millennium 3D Chess*
group, Aaron, just caught a game notation error in the
game between Jeff Burhans vs. William D'Agostino [0-1]
which was completed on July 30, 2005.
On move 36, Black moves a pawn to 3g5, however, Black
has pawns at 2g6 and 3g7 which both can move to 3g5.
The correct move should have been recorded as:
36. ... 33g5
This "33g5" notation designates that the pawn on level
three was moved to 3g5.
Please note that all move notation always ends with
the "Level-Column-Row" format, and any additional
information will indicate from where the chess piece
was moved, for example, from level 3.
Likewise, the same move could have used the alternate
notation "73g5" which is equally acceptable. In this
case, the "7" designates that the pawn in row 7 was
moved to 3g5.
As a general rule, always use the shortest notation
which properly describes the correct legal move. It
is the player's option to use a number indicating
level (or row) or letter from column. As you can
guess, there will be times when extra information is
needed such as when a piece is on level 1 and another
identical piece is on row 1 and both pieces could be
moved to the same square.
So, additional information such as the level plus
column, or column plus row, or level plus row, can be
used as a move prefix. In rare occasions, it could be
necessary to include the full "level-column-row" of
the starting location as a prefix to the move, but
this is a very rare occurrence which has not happened
in any of the games which I have played.
Finally, I wish to personally thank Aaron for catching
this error. I have corrected the game record, and
please let me know if anyone finds any other errors
with any of the posted games!
As always...
Enjoy the Play!*

The PGN file reading and writing now works (almost completely) and I
am very close to releasing the beta for a couple players to try. I'll
probably just try to play a game against William first ;)
Pawn promotion doesn't quite work yet when reading/writing a PGN file,
but I can watch most of the recorded games. This should be the last
stumbling block prior to beta release. This may be a little
challenging so bear with me another week or two.
Players can still move to ANY square they want, during reguar play,
but I think that this can be changed during the beta testing stage and
players just need to be careful in the meantime.
I still haven't made new models of the pieces (so the knights still
look lumpy and hard to distinguish, as Bob pointed out) but that is
low on the priority list right now. You can actually see all the
pieces better when you are playing the game. I have adjusted the
lighting to help a little, as well.
I have tested the game on the following platforms:
MSWin (tested 2K and XP), Linux (tested Fedora Core 4,5) and Mac OS
X(tested 10.4). The Win2k machine I used was an old PIII-500 with an
old ATI card. Things were very slow but usable, so my lowest common
denominator target is this old machine. Any higher poly count and this
machine will not run the game.
Thanks,
K.Wilson
P.S. Hey Bob, I'm sorry about the last postings that had my name

Hi William et al.,
Just to let you know that I have made some progress on
the game that I mailed the list about a few weeks
back. It's been a little slow as I have been out of
town.
I now have the PGN file reading working, so that I can
watch some of the matches posted on the Yahoo site.
There is still one bug to work out for this part.
I don't have the PGN file writing working just yet,
but that should be fairly easy since I now have the
structure of the valid game piece movements set up.
I have added some cameras to the game so that you can
see different views of the game boards just by
pressing the function keys. This means you don't have
to zoom/pan around the board with a single camera,
which ultimately means I can use higher poly (ie.
smoother looking) pieces without stressing the
computer.
You can see a couple more (grainy) screenshots here:
http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~wilsonk/3dchess.gifhttp://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~wilsonk/3dchess1.gifhttp://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~wilsonk/3dchess2.gif
Sorry about the quality of the gif pictures, but I
don't want everyone to have to download 1M files ;)
I will keep you posted as to when I can release a beta
copy for testing.
Thanks,
K.Wilson

If you are interested in 3D chess- do you know about
Parmen? It plays Star Trek 3D chess. Let me know if
you are wanting more info- I'm in the club that plays

My bad - I forgot that the List doesn't allow attached
files! *DOH!*
So anyway, here are two links to screen captures from
the early Beta version of Knight Commander, a PGN
viewer for 2D and Millennium 3D Chess games...
The first one is Will's game against Davis, the second
one is where Will is beating the snot out of me - the
current position of our game at the moment.
