My bad - I forgot that the List doesn't allow attached
files! *DOH!*
So anyway, here are two links to screen captures from
the early Beta version of Knight Commander, a PGN
viewer for 2D and Millennium 3D Chess games...
The first one is Will's game against Davis, the second
one is where Will is beating the snot out of me - the
current position of our game at the moment.

I have been working on a 3D version of Millenium 3D Chess* for a
little while now. There should be a screen shot of the "beta" board
and characters at this location:
http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~wilsonk/3dchess.gif
The game has NO game AI (artificial intelligence), as yet, and the
moving of the pieces is completely controlled by the users without
restrictions (ie. one could plop two pawns on the same square). This
is truly "beta", at this point ;)
You may be able to see a couple things on the board -- the white Queen
is highlighted in green, since it is the currently chosen piece for
the white player. There is also a square sized blue outline just in
front of the queens pawn...this is where the currently selected piece
will move to.
You probably can't see the third level chess board, but it is
there...it is just that the view is too narrow to show all the pieces
and all three boards with a clear view ;) You may also notice the
pieces don't look very "smooth/sophisticated"...this is because I am
just catering to a low common denominator here (ie. no hardware
acceleration for the 3d graphics)...but I can change the models for
each piece later. There are also a few pixels out of place but that
resolves itelf when you zoom in or out to view the pieces more clearly
(it is a slight rendering problem).
I am working on reading PGN right now so that you could watch the
games from the library being played out. This will also give me the
ability to email "game files" back and forth to move the pieces with a
partner. Of course, the game AI for playing against a computer will be
the hard part, but that will come later.
This game should be available for Linux, MacOSX and Windows, but I
have only tested Linux/Mac so far.
Let me know what you think,
K.Wilson
P.S. I understand Orion has a PGN reading 3D program in beta, as well.
Oh well, never hurts to have more than one alternative ;)

Hi K.Wilson,
Thanks for building a 3D computer version of
Millennium 3D Chess*, and I'll be happy to help beta
test it with you. It looks like you're off to a good
start!
In reference to the "legal" stuff, I will be happy to
grant you a free license to use the Millennium 3D
Chess* rules and name provided that you offer your
progam as "freeware" and include my copyright and
trademark notice. I can help write the legal notice
when you get nearer to your offical release.
But, I'm excited to see your program, and I hope it
will help others to play and enjoy the game...
Please keep me posted with your process...
Thanks,
Will

P.S. Yes, Orion also has a "beta" version of a PGN
program for reading Millennium 3D Chess* games... I'm
looking forward to seeing the final release of Orion's
program too.

One of the regular members (Thanks Jeff!) of this list emailed me
today and mentioned that there were several typos in the game which
I posted about a month ago.
Luckily, I still had the original handwritten game record, so it was
pretty easy to find and correct the errors. Below is the corrected
game record between Nicholas Henderson (Black) and myself (White).

I am looking to pay someone to craft a 3D board for me. Every design I've seen,
except for a board I had as a youngster, yields poor visibility among the
planes. This can easily be resolved using a 3-bar design with a cross-bar base
so none of the bars are along the side or corners of the planes. If someone is
interested in making such a board, I am willing to pay a very fair price for it.
Ideally I would like glass planes, but sturdy plexi-glass would be fine also.

Hi Frank,
The Alpha Chess Fonts have a lot of features for freeware fonts. For
example, if you type a "k" -- you'll get a White King Image suitable
for a graphical diagram. But, if you type a "," -- you'll get a White
King Image suitable for inserting/typing into text.
When you downloaded and expanded the original Alpha Fonts, there
should have been an "Alpha" document which listed all of the various
symbols for graphics and text use.
If needed, I can email the "Alpha.doc" file to you directly.
Cheers,
Will

Hi Everyone,
Just as a reminder, I have the "attachment" forwarding
feature of this email list turned "off" to prevent the
bulk mailing of a virus or Trojan horse by an outside
hacker.
There are a couple of ways to distribute attachments.
The first and easiest is to sent the attachment
directly to the intended person. Or, you can send it
to me, and I can upload it to the "files" section of
this yahoogroup list.
Sorry about any inconvenience this may cause.
Cheers,
Will

Sounds like a plan!
Please find the game board attached. (Just in case,
I've attached the Chess Alpha font - Just copy it into
the c:\windows\font directory (alpha.tff) before you
open the excel spreadsheet)

Hello Chris!
hae you seen the pictures of the one I made for
myself? You can see it here:
http://www.noonelike.us/~orion/chess.html
Scroll down to the last couple of pictures on the
page...
I can do this design, or a different one - Your choice
and I'd work with you to make it look the way you want
it to look. Would you want pieces with it? Or do you
have your own?
Hope to hear from you!

Hello Steve!
I've attached the Excel spreadsheet that I use - with
a partial game in it so that you can see it. I've also
included the Chess font (Alpha.tff) from Will's
website - Copy it into your c:\windows\fonts directory
before you open up the Excel spreadsheet.
Let me know what you think!

Hi John and the group,
In reference to Yahoo Chess, you can find Yahoo Chess
at http://games.yahoo.com/play/ch&ss=1 or you can
access it from the Yahoo home page and clicking on the
"Games" listing on the left side of the Yahoo home
page screen.
Millennium 3D Chess* is a little different. It's
played on three standard 8 by 8 chess boards which are
stacked above each other representing three levels.
It's a fun and challenging chess variant to
traditional 2D chess.
Most 3D chess games are played via email or
face-to-face. Currently, we don't have a server for
"real-time" playing on the Internet. Maybe someday...
About a chess rating, I have considered implementing a
Millennium 3D Chess* rating system similar to the IECG
algorithm, however, I'm still waiting to see if there
is enough interest in maintaining a 3D chess rating
system. The idea for new 3D players is that they
would start with their existing traditional (2D) chess
rating (if they already had one). Food for thought.
After you read the Millennium 3D Chess* rule, please
let me know if you would like to start an email game
of Millennium 3D Chess*? A 3x8x8 chess board is
helpful to have, but it is not necessary as most
players keep track of their games using an Excel
spreadsheet (or similar) and freeware chess fonts.
Let me know about the email game...
Cheers,
Will

Orion makes awesome 3D chessboards. He's making me a Dragonchess board
right now (he sends me photos every night -- his work is stunning).
And his prices are more than reasonable.
I have a Franklin Mint ST3D chessboard right now, but if I were to do
it over again, I'd commission Orion to make me one instead.

I have a ST3D set that I play on, plus the e-mail
Excel files (based upon those created by Will
D'Agostino) for ST3D play - I'd be glad to take you
on!
Are you a member of the 3D Chess group? (the more
general one - this list is dedicated to Millenium 3D
Chess) - If so, we can move our game discussion there,
if not, join up and we'll move our game discussion
there. :-D
