To answer your question about "why" someone would play
3D chess verses 2D chess, I can only say that it's
fun...

From a personal perspective, I enjoy both traditional
2D chess as well as 3D chess as I find both games to
be very challenging. Traditional 2D chess has a lot
of history and complex strategies, whereas, Millennium
3D Chess* offers a tremendous amount of chess piece
mobility which translates into an entirely new set of
chess strategies.

However, I will say that many traditional chess
"basics" such as "not-wondering-about" and
"control-of-squares" are equally applicable to both 2D
and 3D chess, so playing either game will strengthen
your skills for the other.

Enjoy the play (both 2D and 3D)!

Cheers,
Will

I just started learning chess about 2 weeks ago and have found it to
be an extremely fun game. What would you tell a person like me to
convince her that she should be playing 3d chess? What is so
intriguing about it, in your opinion? Is it more fun that regular
chess, and why?

for those of you interested, photos of my generic 3x8x8 chess set
appeared on chessvariants.com yesterday at:

http://www.chessvariants.com/d.photo/3d_photos.html

i was going to add that the page includes a photo of my board set up
for an actual game of millenium 3D between me and william a'gostino,
but i just discovered that he's already using the pic on the homepage
for this yahoo group (i obviously haven't been here in awhile).

the page includes 7 other pics (including one of yours truly) and a
brief discussion of the set and how it's assembled.

thanks,
ben

Here is a recently completed Millennium 3D Chess* game played between
Benjamin Good (White) and William D'Agostino (Black). As you can see
from this game record, Black made the first blunder on Move 14 which
lost Black's Rook. Seven moves later, White made a similar error on
Move 21 which lost White's Queen. Because of the material imbalance,
White resigned three turns later. A re-match is already underway!

Hi Dale,

Welcome to the Millennium 3D Chess* email reflector!

In reply to your question concerning where to purchase
a 3D chess board, you can usually find used 3D chess
boards at www.ebay.com

However, please keep in mind that there are many
different types of 3D chess boards, and Millennium 3D
Chess* is played on a "traditional" 3 by 8 by 8
playing field (i.e., three standard 8 by 8 chess
boards stacked on top of each other).

Also, from time to time, some of the members of this
email list have offered both new and used 3x8x8 boards
for sale. However, it has been several months since
the last offer.

Finally, you can use a spread sheet program like Excel
to keep track of your email Millennium 3D Chess* games
with real chess fonts... You can download
instructions and freeware chess fonts from the "files"
section of the web page for this email reflector at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Millennium_3D_Chess/

I used this type of spreadsheet to keep track of my
email Millennium 3D Chess* games...

Enjoy the play!

Cheers!
Will

Subject: Millennium 3D Chess* Rook Movement
william_dago...
Offline Offline
Send Email Send Email

Hi Everyone,

I just received an email from a 3D chess player named
"Mike", and he asked, "I have a question about the
[Millennium 3D Chess*] moves that a ROOK can perform.
In the PDF document it is stated and shown that the
ROOK from 1a1 may move to 2a2, 2b1, 3a3 and 3c1, why
are these moves permitted? These moves seem to be
diagonal not along rank or file."

I replied to Mike's email directly, however, I thought
that it would also be appropriate to post my reply to
here...

In reference to the Rook movement in Millennium 3D
Chess*, actually, the Rook only moves along a rank or
a file. The only difference is that a Rook is allowed
to change levels at the same time as moving along a
rank or a file. Since a Rook is restricted in moving
in a straight line along a rank or file, then the
Millennium 3D Chess* Rook must also be restricted in
traveling along a straight line while changing levels.
Using this clarification, a Rook is never allowed to
move on a diagonal.

There are other reasons why a Rook must be allowed to
change levels while moving along a rank or file. The
first reason is to keep the Rook from becoming an
inferior piece to the Bishop. In several 3D chess
games, a Bishop is significantly stronger than a Rook.
For example, if a Rook was not allowed to change
levels at the same time as moving along a rank or
file, then the maximum number of squares which a Rook
could control (i.e., attack) in a 8 by 8 by 3 playing
field is 16 squares whereas a Bishop would clearly
have the upper hand as the Bishop could control a
maximum of 21 squares. However, by allowing the Rook
to change
levels while moving along a rank or file, the Rook now
controls a maximum of 24 squares, and unlike a Bishop,
the Rook is not confined to squares of a single color.
This returns the balance of power to the Rook,
whereas the Bishop continues to stay as a minor chess
piece.

Likewise, several other 3D chess games are
inconsistent
with their own rules. For example, many of the
other variations allow a Bishop to change levels while
moving along a diagonal, yet they will not allow a
Rook to change levels while moving along a rank (or a
file).

Another common inconsistency concerns the Queen. The
other reason why the Rook must be allowed to change
levels while moving along a rank or file, is that the
movement of a Queen is traditionally the combined
movements of a Rook plus a Bishop. However, many 3D
chess games allow a Queen to change levels while
moving along a rank or a file, yet for some unknown
reason, the same game will prevent the Rook from doing
the same. This means that the movement of the Queen
is not the combined movement of the Rook and Bishop,
but rather a combination of something else (which is
not defined).

For consistency, you'll notice that any chess piece in
Millennium 3D Chess* which is allowed to move along a
file is also allowed to change levels while advancing
(i.e., Pawn, Rook, Queen, King), and any chess piece
which is allow to move on a diagonal is also allowed
to change levels while moving along the diagonal
(i.e., Bishop, Queen, King).

I hope that this explantation helps. I think that
you'll find Millennium 3D Chess* to be a very playable
chess game which follows the strategies and concepts
of traditional 2D chess.

order. The sets will be made with 3 8"x8" plexiglass plates and will
stand about 1 foot tall. It will include all of the pieces you need
to play as well as rules for Millennium (tm) Chess.

We currently plan to sell these sets for $100.00 each.

If you would be interested in ordering one just email me:

All,

Being that William D'Agostino and I are testing out the Millennium

In doing this I do not want anything I say to be mistaken as gloating

as

game and
therefore its playability.

I am posting this only after hgaving run it by Will and soliciting his

White opens with the D'Agostino opening. The three moves immediately
develope all three of white's King's pieces into strong protected
positions
on level 2.

Black opens in a riskier manner by immediately dropping all three
heavy
pieces (both rooks and the queen) to level 2, thus grabbing control
of a
large segment of level 2. The opening also has the unforeseen effect
of
potentially preventng White from developing the same three pieces in
the
same way on the king's side.

In the next 8 moves we dance around each other and then in the 12th
move we
exchange rooks.

>20. N1g5 Q2f7
>21. 3a4 Q2b3

In move 21 Black creates a fork, threatening white's bishop and
white's
queen (as well as two unprotected pawns) at the same time. Any good
player
knows that the best way out of a fork is to move one threatened piece
into
a position where it protects the other threatened piece (if you
can). In
this case the predictable move for white is Q3e2 which LOOKS like the
best
move because it moves Whit'es queen out of jeapordy and into a
position to
protect the threatened bishop. This is exactly what white does:

>22. Q3e2 B3a6

But in executing this move WHite only succeeds in falling into a trap
set
by black. Whit has been luered into placing two heavy pices (a rook
and
its queen) in a single diagnol line together where they can easily be
pinned by black's bishop. Black responds by moving a bishop up from
level
1 which now has White's rook pinned against the White Queen. There
is now
no way to save White's rook, although WHite can force a trade of
Queens.

>23. Q3c2 Bx3c4

White moves its queen into a position that will allow white to force a
trade of queens if black takes white rook. Black takes white rook.

>24. Qx2b3 Bx2b3

White presses a trade of queens.

(the real solution for white was back at move 22 where White's best
move
was actually to let the bishop be taken by white and to move its
queen out
of the area entirely. The apparant "best move" only served to set up
White's rook to be pinned and taken.

The moral to this is that in general terms the basic stratgies of
Chess do
cary over in a more complex three dimensional form in Millennium
Chess in a
way that is proving itself to be very playable, challenging and
enjoyabale.

William's added comments:

Hi James,

You have a very good ability to analyze chess. From
my point of view, I simply made a blunder on move "21.
3a4" as I forgot that I needed to protect 2b3. I
guess that is "the nature of the beast" when playing a
correspondence game...

But, the one thing I would add to your commentary is
that BOTH players are thoroughly ENJOYING the game.
After all, that is the real reason we're involved with
chess anyways! Win, loose or draw, you are a very
good opponent, and this game has turned out to be
simply fun! It has been some years since I have
played a 3D opponent who is as skilled as you are!
Enjoy the play!

Cheers,
Will

I want to echo Will's thoughts here. Will is a very worthy opponant
and
this is the most challenging game of 3-D Chess I have played in years
as
well. It was by no means easy to wrest Will's rook away from him and
I
have no doubt that while I am slightly ahead at the moment that the
the
tide could change at a moments notice. Will may easily be the victor
of
this game. Nonetheless the game has been EJOYABLE, CHALLENGING and
MENATLLY STIMULATING. It has been everything that 3-D Chess should
be.
There is no doubt in my mind that Millennium Chess is a very playable
and
enjoyable form of 3-D Chess. I am definitely ready to trade in my old
Chess Cubed 8x8x3 rules for Millennium Chess 8x8x3 rules.

Millennium Chess is a version of Three Dimensional Chess developed by
WIlliam D'Agostino to play out on an 8x8x3 playing field.

SPACE CHESS

As far as I can determine the 8x8x3 playing field was first
introduced in
1969 by the Pacific Games Company for a 3-D version they called "Space
Chess". This version had an 8x8x3 playing field supported by a wooden
central pole. The game had 8 spaces on each level (the four center
spaces
and the four spaces immediately diagnal to them) marked with a star,
and
two spaces on each level (f1 and f8) marked with a king symbol. Only
those
spaces could be used to change levels (only the King could use the
king
symbol to change levels) and level changes only involved moving the
man up
or down in addition to their traditional two-dimensional move. The
game
actually claimed to be 4 dimensional because of the element of timing
in
playing it (ROFL).

CHESS CUBED

The only evidence of Chess Cubed that I have found is my own set
which my
parants bought me back in the 70's. This set was supported by a
steel "3"
shaped frame. The information I have is sketchy. The instructions
have a
copyright of 1971 by Classic Games Company. However the Game is
called
"Edition IV Chess Cubed" (it actually has "Chess" with a
subscript "3" but
in the directions we are told that it is pronounced "Chess Cubed".)
The
question remains if this was "Edition IV" then what were Edition I,
Edition
II and Edition III? If Ediution IV instructions were copyrighted
1971 then
was Edition I around much earlier? We may never know. This was the
best
version of the game to date. Chess Cubed did NOT have star spaces or
specially marked king spaces (in fact no other version after "Space
Chess"
did.) Chess cubed actually extrapolated 3D versions of the 2D moves
of the
chess men. (For some reason my instructions have typewritten style
date of
1975 written in the bottom margin of one of the instruction pages and
my
set would have likley been purchesd between 1975 and 1977.

CHESS IN THE THIRD DIMENSION

Also in 1971 (I do not know if it was before or after Chess Cubed was
released) Skor Mor came out with Chess in the Third Dimension. In its
initial release it seems that this game used a similar wooden central
pole
design as space chess, but later used an all translucet/transparent
design
with a "3" shaped frame. Chess in the Third Dimension had poor rules
which
did nor extrapol;ate 3d moves for the pieces. Instead level changes
simply
involded changing levels without extapolated 3D versions of the 2D
moves.

STRATO CHESS

In 1978 the John Hansen Company produced Strato Chess. This design
was
similar to that of Chess Cubed except that it used a steel "S" frame
rather
thn a steel "3" frame. The rules are ambiguous and poorly written
but seem
to indicate movement like that in Chess Cubed.

MILLENNIUM CHESS

In 2001 William D'Agostino who had owned a Chess in the Third
Dimension set
developed a set of rules similar to the Chess Cubed Rules (although
he had
been unaware of Chess Cubed or STrato Chess rules) for playing 3D
Chess on
an 8x8x3 playing field. The Millennium rules differ from Chess Cubed
Rules
in that they require a pawn to reach the 8th rank of the opponants
level
rather than just any level in order to be promoted. Also Millennium
Chess
adds a sloping move to the Rook, Queen, pawn and King. After a 23
year
limbo the 8x8x3 playingfield was reborn and in June of 2001
D'Agustino and
Trimm began an online email game of Millennium Chess using 8x8x3 sets
that
they had each had for over 20 years.

Excel Spreadsheet for 3D Correspondence Games

Attached is a simple Excel 97 spreadsheet which I find
usefully for playing 3D correspondence games. Instead
of keeping a full-size 3D chess board set-up, I simply
update the spreadsheet for tracking the game position.

There is nothing magical about the format as it can be
modified as needed to fit your individual preferences.

I will also post a copy in the "files" section too.

Hi James,

I know that your a strong 3D advocate, and I'm
interested in learning your opinion of the
"Millennium" 8x8x3 variant?

I have never played the Star Trek version (probably
due to a lack of boards)... So, I'm probably the
wrong guy for a meaningful Star Trek game...

However, if you're interested, I would like to
challenge you to an email game of the Millennium
variant.

Cheers!

8x8x3 Chess Variant

Hi. My name is William D'Agostino, and I first began
to play 3D chess in 1977 when a received a 8x8x3 chess
board made by "Skor-Mor" as a gift. I was immediately
intrigued by 3D chess. Unfortunately, the "Chess in
the Third Dimension" rules that were included with the
Skor-Mor board were incomplete and required mandatory
level-changing moves. Even though I enjoyed the
challenge of playing this particular variant, it was
very difficult to find opponents who agreed with these
"odd" playing rules. For reference, a copy of the
8x8x3 Skor-Mor rules can be downloaded from:

http://www.jtelmore.com/3dchess.html

During the next several years, I searched for a "more"
playable version of a 8x8x3 chess game, but my search
was not successful, especially since this was well
before the widespread availability to the internet.
So, I decided to write a set of 8x8x3 chess rules with
the objective of extending the traditional 2D chess
game into a multilevel environment without distorting
the basic game. To the end, this new 8x8x3 variant
did not "create" new pieces or chess rules. Other
that the concept of moving between chess boards, all
traditional 2D chess rules were applied.

This variant was developed completely independently of
the 8x8x3 "Chess3/Chess Cube" variant. At first
glance, these two variants seem similar, however,
there are major differences. As an example, in both
traditional 2D chess and this 8x8x3 variant, the Queen
has the same movement as the Bishop combined with the
Rook, however, the "Chess3/Chess Cube" variant does
not follow this guideline. Likewise, I attempted to
prepare a "complete" set of 8x8x3 rules which includes
"Castling", "En Passant" and "Promotion" rules,
whereas many 3D variants lack good definition of these
special rules.

At the request of a 2D email chess colleague, I
updated my old 8x8x3 chess rules, added a new name to
this chess variant, and set-up a web site where this
3D chess variant rules can be downloaded.

With this in mind, I am soliciting the comments and
suggestions from the members of this 3D Chess
reflector to review the rules to this 8x8x3 variant.
A copy of this 8x8x3 variant (in a PDF format) can be
downloaded from:

http://www.geocities.com/william_dagostino/

Or, you can download a copy from a yahoogroups
reflector called:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/millennium_3d_chess

If you have any problems in downloading these rules,
then please contact me directly, and I'll email a copy
to you. Likewise, please post your comments to either
yahoogroups reflector, or you can email your comments
about this 8x8x3 variant to me at:

william_dagostino@...

Finally, if anyone is interested in playing an email
chess game using this 8x8x3 variant, then please
contact me.

Thank you.

Hi Dave,

With 500 years of traditional chess completely waisted
on 3D chess, I am unaware of any 3D software, but that
doesn't mean it doesn't exist somewhere in a land far,
far away... If I was retired, I would probable
attempt to write a 3D program, but that sounds like
too much work presently...

Just think, some 500 years from now, people may be
talking about the Tomlinson Opening or the D'Agostino
Defense... With that in mind, would you like to play
White?

Yes, I concur with the "sane" verses "insane"
comment... For example, in traditional 2D chess,
there are only 20 possible opening White moves, with
only 400 potential positions after Black's first move.
With 3D chess, there are 102 possible White opening
moves with only 10,816 possible positions after
Black's first move... Yes, sane verse insane... At
least you can throw away all of your old chess books,
as you'll be writing the new chapters with each
move...

I'm going to track the game via an excel worksheets,
so technically, that could be considered "chess"
software...

Cheers!
Will

PS. All is well over here! How's your family?
