IPOG Raicer Conference Semi Final Result

Paul Hubbard's CP beat Keith Schooze's Allies on time in a very close game.

Keith ran out of time as we entered turn 20, with the game at 11VP.  At the time, the Western Front Allies were looking slightly thin but holding the French forts and Brussels, Italy was stalled with CP forces well entrenched in Verona and Venice facing combined French/Italians dug in in Bologna, Turin and Florence.  Iraq had fallen to the Turks, who were battering at the Caucasus after digging in Sinai to stop Allenby escaping Egypt.  Most action for the last two turns had centred around knocking the Russians back from the doors of Berlin and Breslau, inflicting huge casualties, and ending with Germans in Grodno and Kovno, and Austrians regaining all of East Prussia.

The game flowed well, with both sides gaining advantage which was countered.  A slight stalling for us both was the inordinate number of failed trench rolls - Bologna in particular took at least 6 (and possibly more) attempts from the French to dig in.  This was, however, balanced by the Germans being similarly inept in Strasbourg, Sedan and Verona; combined with a series of 1 attack rolls when YLD was trying to take Basra this probably evened out overall, but caused us both intense frustrations.

The WAllies made continual sniping attacks across the muddy wastes, but never really managed to severely hurt the entrenched Germans.  The Russians came close to breaking the German lines around Danzig, Thorn and Breslau but the Germans had just enough, just in time, to hold the line and then, with a hefty dose of timely RPs, started knocking the Russians down - being so far from home hampered the Russians a lot as they were never able to bring forces back into play quickly enough to stop the German charge.

Not sure how the game would have ended if we had played to conclusion - probably in a draw as, with just 1 Blockade to come, the CP had more scope for grabbing another VP or so than the Allies (of course, such discussion is moot as the time factor is part of the league and I would, for example, have played High Sea Fleet as the Event if I wasn't merely running Keith's clock down in T19.)

Good game Keith - looking forward to the next one

Paul
