Dear IGDA Members,
We would like to take this opportunity to remind and invite you to
the 3rd Annual Carleton Game Day Event. This year we have lectures
from industry giants Microsoft, and EA... But, we have reserved the
majority of the space for the Ottawa local industry who will be
looking to tell you about their exciting projects and how they made
some of the games you know so well. Artech, Fuel Industries, Magmic,
Nortel and Sylien Games will all be available to let you know what
they are up to. More information is available at: http://
gameday.carleton.ca/
Lunch and snacks are provided courtesy of Carleton University. We
would like to ask that you register online (gameday.carleton.ca) so
that we can get an accurate count of participants and order the right
amount of food.
We look forward to seeing you all this coming Saturday.
CU Game Day Organizaing Committee.
In a Game Jam, artists, programmers, and
designers come together to make video games. Each participant works in a small
team on a complete game project over the course of a limited time period,
usually over a weekend. In a Global Game Jam, people all over the world meet at
44 different sites to jam simultaneously!
Competition
Start: Friday January 30, 2009, 5:00PM
End: Sunday February 1, 2009, 3:00PM
Evaluation
Sunday February 1, 2009, 3:00-5:00PM
How It Works
Everyone meets at their local Game Jam on
Friday, January 30, 2009. Doors will be shut promptly at 5:00pm. Local
Organizers will then share the constraints and rules for the game Jam. Everyone
will have 15 mins. to come up with a pitch and then share it with the group.
Teams will then be formed; no one leaves until everyone is a part of a team.
Teams are free to use the space at the host venue. Each team will have until
3:00PM on Sunday, February 1st to create their game. The local jurors will then
go around and play all the games and at 5:00pm, each team will present their
game to all participants. Each Local Jam will announce what team best embodies
the spirit of the jam. We hope to raise enough funds to bring the best examples
of the local Game Jams to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA,
USA. All finished games will be archived onto the Global Game Jam website for
all to play.
Participation is free. Competition will happen
in Azrieli Pavilion, Carleton University. Computers with common programming and
multimedia software and internet access, and also access to rest area and food
to buy (and some free meals) will be provided.

Best in Show
and Best Service/Product Provider at DevLearn 2008
OTTAWA, Canada, November 17th, 2008 DISTIL
Interactive Ltd., an Ottawa-based leader in the use of digital gaming
technology as a corporate learning environment beat a field of 40
learning technology vendors to win two key awards at last week's DevLearn
conference in San Jose CA.
The Best in Show was awarded for the digital learning
environment "Business in Balance: Implementing an Environmental Management
System" developed in collaboration with the Canadian Standards Association
(CSA) teaches organizations how to develop an environmental system for their
workplace. The Best Product/Service Provider category was awarded for
across-the-board product excellence.
"This is an exciting achievement by the DISTIL and CSA
teams," said CEO Robert Thompson.
"While we strongly believe in digital gaming's power as a corporate learning
tool, being recognized by the attendees at North America's
largest international e-Learning showcase is a great endorsement. We
believe a key ingredient in our Best Product/Service Provider award was our
integrated assessment technology which mines the game-play data to provide
feed-back to learners and to provide their organization with detailed
performance information."
DevLearn is a gathering of over 1,200 members of the
eLearning Guild. The conference addresses the technology and professional-skill
aspects of eLearning initiatives. Each year, attendees pick winners from five
vendor award categories.
At the show, DISTIL also previewed its set of learning
game authoring tools to a select group of industry thought leaders. Today
DISTIL uses these tools internally to build its award-winning courseware but
within months this technology will be released to corporate training
departments so they can build their own games-based learning.
"Just as it is a driver in the entertainment gaming
world," added Thompson, "user-generated content will be the key to broad
adoption of learning games by corporations. With DISTIL's interactive
tools, an instructional designer will soon produce a learning game module as
easily as they build a PowerPoint presentation today."
About Distil Interactive Ltd: DISTIL is a venture-backed new media company, has developed a platform
that utilizes "video games" technology for Talent Management
applications.
Today the DISTIL platform is revolutionizing the way
professionals are trained and certified through Digital Game-Based Learning
(DGBL). eLearning games users benefit from the intuitive, immersive,
interactive experience provided by DISTIL products that accelerates learning
through virtual experience. Training providers benefit from the enhanced
skills transfer and learning time compression offered by DGBL, and the
integrated assessment technology that evaluates performance through game-play.
DISTIL also manages on-line distribution and re-sale of award winning DGBL
programs co-developed with its training partners, including an extensive set of
Quality, Health & Safety, Environmental, Emergency Preparedness and ISO
Standards training products. You can learn more about DISTIL Interactive

Sure, it's very much possible. You'd be basically working as an
artist. The understanding that you need to have of how the artwork
gets incorporated into the game engine will come with experience.
I'm going into the field, the only problem is, I want to do very little
to no coding whatsoever, and do the 3D Animation aspects only. Is this
possible?
