The State of Paupers: November 2007

Over the last few months Paupers has seen a little facelift and some
new additions. There's been some other changes that occurred as well
as some upcoming stuff. We're strong believers in communication and
for years Paupers has gained a reputation of being a "locker" house,
with over 7500 members with a strong majority of them being involved
for the sheer purpose of a bigger locker. While there is no problem
with this, the current Officers of Paupers feel we should be doing
more to offer more to those people outside of the majority who do
wish to enjoy a fun and exciting and inviting House. We want to make
sure Paupers doesn't change to fit the whim or pleasure of each
Officer, but instead strive to better the House through improvements
and additions that the members will enjoy. To that end we are
presenting the State of Paupers in a chance to communicate recent
and upcoming changes to you, the members, and then provide venues for
all members to offer suggestions, share their ideas and make their
voice heard. There's no way we'll ever be able to make every member
happy, but we're not happy ourselves unless we're trying.

A House meeting will be scheduled for sometime in December, with both
members and officers invited to be in attendance. It will be a good
chance to have an open forum where ideas and suggestions can be
submitted and discussed openly and live. Otherwise, all other issues,
concerns, ideas and suggestions can be made by emailing
TheDiaperedAvenger@...

House of Paupers has lacked some new refreshments for years...so it's
time we fixed that!

Set up in the Commons, is a mahogany cart with a plethora or drinks
and food for your delight! The cart will be there most days but may
occassionally be moved to support certain Paupers Events, etc. But
when normal activity is abound, expect the cart full of drinks and
food to be made readily available. Enjoy!

[House of Paupers, Commons]
More books and scrolls than you've ever seen in one place line the
walls of this spacious room, the central focus of which is a massive
fireplace in which fragrant cherry wood crackles and pops. Trophies,
busts and sketches of prominent local citizens are in evidence.
Large floor cushions and comfortable armchairs invite you to relax,
read or enjoy conversation at an immaculately polished table in one
corner. The gleaming mahogany bar is well-stocked with only the
finest libations. You also see a silver-traced carved mahogany cart
with some stuff on it, a polished mahogany door, a steel door, a
heavy slate blackboard, an ora door, a trash barrel and a green arch.
Obvious exits: none

On the carved mahogany cart you see a spear of buttery asparagus, a
glass of kiwi lemonade, a cup of steaming rose tea, an icy cold
bottle of beer, a stein of thick silver ale, a wide glass of
cranberry-apple juice, some rum-soaked vanilla cake, a sugar-dusted
strawberry, a goblet of warm blackberry brandy, a tankard of Pauper's
brew, a slice of warm pumpkin pie, a fried cheese-stuffed shrimp, a
honey-dipped tiny roasted quail, a juicy orange-flavored rolton
skewer, a bunch of champagne-soaked grapes, a bottle of blueberry rum
and a small bowl of cherry-topped ice cream.

ORIGIN OF THE HOUSE OF PAUPERS

Leviticus Shaw was born into nobility in the city of Calay, a human
city-state east of the Dragonspine Mountains a few weeks travel from
Ta'Nalfein. During the day he spent most of his time dealing with
matters of the court and preparing to take over his father's
business. Although he worked hard to earn his place among the admired
and venerated nobility, he was often plagued by a feeling that his
success was mostly the result of being in his father's shadow.

Thus it was that under the cloak of darkness, Shaw joined other
nobles in Calay who indulged their more nefarious nature by dabbling
in the art of summoning. While some nobles used their talent for
sheer utilitarian purposes, others like Shaw sought such power to
gain control and respect. Shaw, while still in his mid-twenty's
showed much promise as a summoner and was in line to become the heir
to his father's business dynasty.

Shortly after Shaw's twentieth sixth birthday he was bound to
Vornavis on a business trip in the name of his father. Both cities
had enjoyed beneficial trading over the years but Shaw was sent to
forge a new trading alliance with a rising house within Vornavis'
noble court. This new deal was sure to increase his father's profit
tenfold and firmly establish him as an accomplished businessman.

Shaw had never gone there to find love.

While in Vornavis, Leviticus met a young woman by the name of Ciara
Netosi. He met her as all young lovers do - mysteriously catching
each other's eyes in a public setting, not knowing much of each other
but falling uncontrollably in love. After a week of losing himself in
Ciara, the time had come when Leviticus Shaw had to present himself
before the nobles of Vornavis. Among those present at the court was
his beloved Ciara Netosi with her brothers and father.

As fate would have it, the House of Netosi was the political enemy of
the very family with whom Leviticus Shaw had hoped to gain favor.
Rumors of his bedding the daughter of their life long enemy had
reached the ears of the elders of this House so essential to the
alliance. Thus it was that the trade agreement fell through.
Leviticus Shaw found himself facing the prospect of returning to
Calay, to the Court, to his friends, and to his father as an utter
failure.

If he was to return, that is.

With whatever wealth they personally owned, Shaw and Ciara fled the
borders of Vornavis during the middle of the night. Together they
both abandoned their separate lives of riches and promise to forge
their own life as one. That is when Leviticus and his beloved came
upon the small fledgling city of Wehnimer's Landing. The Landing had
little to offer in the way of luxury but with Shaw's business sense
and the riches Ciara was able to bring with her it wasn't long before
they began to leave their print on the small town.

It was a time of booming growth in the Landing and Shaw immediately
identified the city's most valuable resource. He invested his time
and resources until he owned the entire logging operations for
Wehnimer's Landing. Shaw was a fair and just employer who earned the
respect and friendship of the town's people. Soon Shaw and Ciara were
wealthy far beyond they had ever expected. Within a year they were
wed.

Building a manor in the southwest corner of the hub of the city,
Shaw's arrogance grew as he viewed himself the very center, the very
life blood of the town. It wasn't long before his nefarious tenancies
began to slowly absorb his life. Unbeknownst to his beautiful wife,
Shaw once again began to dabble in the dark arts of summoning and
even hid from his wife the construction of an underground level below
the Shaw Manor.

It was two years later that a son was born to Leviticus and Ciara.
Ryker Shaw was a healthy baby who was cherished by both of his
parents. Surely few men had ever been as contented and happy as
Leviticus during those years. He had built his own successful
business; had a wife that loved and spoiled him; and a son that
brought him a pride and joy he had never known. For six years,
Leviticus and Ciara doted over and spoiled young Ryker. Their son's
laughter rang through the manor erasing any memories of harder times
and sacrifices.

Perhaps it was a lust for more power or to prove something to himself
that kept Leviticus experimenting in areas of dark magic. Deep below
his manor, Leviticus had time and time again opened the door to
creatures and the darkness beyond. As his summoning skills grew and
expanded so did his haughtiness. Then on the eve of Ryker's sixth
birthday, Leviticus Shaw had arrogantly botched a summoning ritual.
Instead of his desired effect, a horrible disease had suddenly
infested his summoning chamber deep below ground and below the manor
that housed his beloved wife and son.

The insidious disease spread quickly across the city and struck its
victims dead within days. Panic and fear engulfed the Landing. No
cause for the pestilence could be found. Herbs and remedies brought
little relief. The reason why the young and most innocent were most
vulnerable was unexplained. Within a week the city was in mourning
the loss of nearly one hundred children. Among the lost was
Leviticus' beloved son, Ryker Shaw.

Driven by his own destructive nature and the knowledge that he was
responsible for his son's death, Leviticus Shaw turned to the magic
of necromancy. He would not fail this time. Ryker had to return to
stop his and Ciara's pain. Guilt and insanity took control.
Cloistered in his summoning chamber, Shaw spent endless hours in vain
attempts to resurrect his son. He would make everything right once
again.

Three years went by and Ciara and Leviticus grew apart, they had both
grown distant after the unexplained death of their son. Shaw had
grown cold and spent most of his time in his study. He had no time
for anything except research and practicing in the death arts.

One cold winter night Ciara had grown impatient with Leviticus'
behavior and decided she would follow him to his study. The time had
come to confront him about their shallow marriage and demand the
attention she deserved. Lost in his own darkness and calculations,
Shaw entered his study, unaware that his wife followed behind.
Crossing the study, he slipped through the hidden tunnel into the
lower secret chambers. Ciara followed and soon discovered the horrors
that would in that instant destroy her mind.

She saw rows and rows of cages lining a stone wall and trapped inside
were creatures, both human and otherworldly. In the center of one
room were the decomposing bodies of humans and elves all tied to
slabs of stone, some missing limbs or some even having extra limbs.
Dried blood caked the floor and walls and a deep cold clung to the
air.

Stepping into a hallway, Ciara saw a stream of light coming from the
crack in a wooden door. Leviticus Shaw became aware of her presence
as she began to move down the hall towards the wooden door. Knowing
what she would discover, he screamed out her name. Running after her
he made a desperate attempt to stop her. It was too late.

As she slowly opened the creaking door, she spied a large room. It
was filled with a plethora of toys, and luxuries to fulfill any
child's dream. Standing in the middle of the room clutching a bright
blue ball was Ryker Shaw, the zombie child.

Seeing the ghastly apparition of her re-animated son, Ciara's sanity
shattered on the spot. As reality flooded her mind, she collapsed to
her knees. It is said the wailing of a distraught mother was heard
upon the wind that night. How the sound escaped the depths of Shaw's
underground chambers has never been explained.

Wishing to keep his evil secret from society, Shaw had a padded cell
constructed below ground. Once it was completed, Ciara was locked
inside. Her cries and incoherent babbling filled his mind as he
continued his desperate search for an answer. If any one could find
the solution he felt he could. He assured himself that his noble
birth alone made him worthy of power. His mind whirled with thoughts
as he slowly descended into the darkest depths of insanity. Shaw
became clumsy in his work and his arrogance was soon replaced by
ineptness.

In the fall of the next year, Ciara Shaw escaped from the cell in
which Leviticus had kept her prisoner. Her mind now fractured and her
heart hardened, she stood staring blankly at the little zombie boy
that held out a hand to her. A flicker of recognition crossed her
eyes as she turned to leave the toy room and headed toward Shaw's
study with her zombie son in tow.

That same night Leviticus Shaw was in his study surrounded by a
circle of blood. He was planning to summon forth dark spirits and
once more compel them to do his bidding. Perhaps it was luck or fated
justice that at exactly the moment Shaw was about to recite the most
critical ritual chant, his wife appeared behind him and plunged a
jagged knife into his back.

Losing his concentration and hold over the rite, the very dark
spirits Shaw had hoped to control did instead rebel against him and
ripped through his magical doorway to enter the material plane.
Within seconds the spirits were devouring Shaw's mortal flesh seeking
revenge upon the arrogant mage who had previously used them as
inferior servants.

Looking back at the staring face of her zombie son, Ciara knew in
that instant she had done the right thing by ending the madness, once
and for all. Having lost her final ounce of humanity, Ciara turned
the jagged knife on herself and joined her husband in death.

The dark spirits rose up into the night and proceeded to spread their
chaos across the city of Wehnimer's Landing. Leaders arose amongst
the holy warriors and clerics who courageously lead the town's
citizenry against the dark summoned spirits. While most of the enemy
were defeated, the remainder were forced back into the chambers deep
below the Shaw Manor. There the town's priests and guards found the
tragic end of both Leviticus and Ciara Shaw. They were never aware
that a zombie child had lived within the cellars.

The city's holy men diligently placed a warding sphere around the
underground chamber. Next a blockade was built to keep the rest of
the manor separated as much as possible from the evil that had
entered into the place. The Shaw Manor was then cleaned up and put up
for auction. The city tired to sell the building for awhile but given
the rumors that surrounded the place, no one dared to purchase it.
Hoping that a name change might improve the chances of selling the
manor, the city renamed the manor - House of Paupers. Some say the
name was chosen to remind folk that with all their riches, the Shaw
family ended up losing everything including life. The property was
uninhabited for many years until a wealthy fur trader purchased it.
He kept the name House of Paupers, remodeled the main house, and
built over the underground areas. Whether or not the new proprietor
was aware of the manor's history was unknown.

Once the renovations were complete, the first gentlemen's club was
opened in the fair city of Wehnimer's Landing. Business was slow at
first. Adventurers passing thru town enjoyed the service and
atmosphere. The proprietor sponsored lavish parties and celebrations
attended by notable or famous guests invited from other towns. Soon
the local citizenry had difficulty ignoring the growing popularity of
the House and decided the horror stories were just folklore after
all. Business began to flourish both in wealth and membership. Over
time the legend of Leviticus Shaw and the secrets buried beneath the
house were almost forgotten.

Almost.

Toy Room and a Study.

Please feel free to visit the new additions to Paupers.

There is a new House Vote set up for the month of Sept. You MUST be
on House Grounds or inside a House Annex to vote.

Please use VOTE HOUSE to see the vote and options, then use VOTE
HOUSE # to cast your vote. Voting ends Midnight, Sept 25th. We look
forward to your participation and opinion! Thanks!

With expansion, renovation and members desires in mind the Officers
of Paupers would like to know which sort of additions you would like
to see. While we understand there may be a few of them you like
please vote for the one that would be top of your list. One day we'd
like to do them all but we have to begin somewhere. Please vote by
using VOTE HOUSE 1, VOTE HOUSE 2, etc. You MUST be within House
Grounds or an Annex to cast your vote. You can clear your vote or
change it at anytime before the deadline. The voting is secret and
therefor officers will not be able to see who votes. The deadline for
this vote is Midnight Elven on Tilamaires, the 25th of Imaerasta. (
Tues, Sept 25th ) Results will be shared after the vote closes.

Option 1: With alchemy in mind, a new expanded House Workshop
accessible by more members with additional props and features within
reason.
Option 2: A summoning chamber to aid in Sorcerer's "rituals"
Option 3: An altar allowing Paladins to link with to teleport home,
alone or with fallen comrades.
Option 4: More tables.
Option 5: A casino attached to the game room, such as blackjack.
Option 6: Pub expansions, more drinks and food items suggested by
members.
Option 7: None of these really interest me
Option 8: Don't really care, I'm sure the Officers will make the
right decisions.

Over the last few months I've had problems making it to the regular
inductions for Paupers which are the first Monday of each month. So
there's been a change. Officers Pithy and Egyet will continue to
carry on the tradition of Monday night inductions but we will be
adding a SECOND monthly night for Paupers inductions. Starting the
first week of October, Paupers will start having a second monthly
induction the first Saturday of every month at 7pm Eastern.

Below is a schedule of Paupers regular Inductions for the remainder
of the year. Please note however, that both Plur and Pithy are able
to do private or spur of the moment inductions at anytime so long as
a second officer can bear witness. You can usually find us both on
the amulet when we're around.

Scheduled Inductions:

Monday, Sept 10th. ( rescheduled from 9/3 due to Holiday ) - 9pm
Eastern.
Monday, Oct 1st. - 9pm Eastern
Saturday, Oct 6th - 7pm Eastern
Monday, Nov 5th - 9pm Eastern
Saturday, Nov 10th - 7pm Eastern
Monday, Dec 3rd - 9pm Eastern
Saturday, Dec 8th - 7pm Eastern

Thanks!

We're currently holding a House Vote. You MUST be inside the House or
a House Annex to cast your vote using the VOTE HOUSE option.

Below is the vote information ( also viewable in game via "vote
house" )

With expansion and renovation now an option, Paupers is considering
those members who frequent our annexes outside of Wehnimer's Landing
more than the main house. With that in mind, which annex do you visit
the most or would like to see improvements too? You may cast your
vote using "vote house 1", "vote house 2", etc. After you've
submitted your vote you can always go back and change it by simply
voting for a different option or using "vote house clear". The
deadline is the 25th of Phoenatos, Midnight elven. Votes are secret
and percentages will be displayed for public.

Option 1: Teras Isle
Option 2: Icemule Trace
Option 3: Solhaven
Option 4: Mist Harbor
Option 5: River's Rest
Option 6: Illistim
Option 7: Vaalor
Option 8: Zul Logoth
Option 9: I don't visit annexes enough, just focus on our main House!

You have not yet voted on this subject.

(This is a secret ballot. This means that no one will be able to see
what you have voted for, or even if you have voted at all, only the
total number of votes for each option.)

For well over a decade and a half, Paupers' bar has been called the
Frothing Mug Pub. The officers of Paupers feel it's about time to
shake things up and let our members have a say in their pub!

So do you want to leave a lasting footprint within House of Paupers
and win some money to boot? House of Paupers is proud to announce
their Summer Contest! Renaming the Paupers pub!

The rules are simple. You must be a member of Paupers. You can
submit as many name ideas as you like, but compiling them into one
submission is easier to keep track. The deadline for this contest is
Wednesday, July 25th at midnight eastern. There will be no
exceptions. To submit your ideas, please send a message titled "
Paupers Contest - Your Name " to TheDiaperedAvenger@...

1st place winner gets 5 million silvers plus the fame of having
picked the new Paupers pub name.
2nd place winner gets 2 million silvers.
3rd place winner gets 1 million silvers.

Officers of Paupers will vote on the submissions and announce a
winner by July 30th.

Remember, this is only to "rename" the pub, NOT redesign it.

i.e [Paupers, The Frothing Mug Pub] will soon become [Paupers, your
idea here!]

We look forward to seeing all of your ideas!

I kept getting spam joiners and spam email on the
pauperstalk/paupersgab yahoo group, and in checking it, no emails had
been sent from that group for a year, so for some reason, I was owner,
no moderators, no clue why. I ditched it. I figured we'd be better
served starting afresh with a new group.

Plus, no one new had joined in a year or more, and fully half the
members had been "bouncing" for two+ years. So, apologies if I
inconvenienced anyone, but I doubt it'll be missed!

Alright folks!

The end of the year is quickly coming and it's always good to be
prepared! Every year the Cooperative Houses of Elanthia host a
Winter Faire and each year all organizations design and
ceremoniously hang an ornament on a tree! This year, Paupers plans
to be the winner...damnit!

So, here's your contest, Paupers members!

Design an ornament, reflecting House Paupers in your eyes, and
submit it!

We'll select a 1st and 2nd place winner and award them 2 million
silvers and 1 million silvers. 1st place winner's ornament will be
contracted with merchants to be made and hung on the tree for all to
see during the Winter Faire.

We do reserve the right to make small changes to the design slightly
if needed to meet the merchant's requests/demands, etc.

The contest will run from 11/1 through midnight 11/15.

You can submit more than one design but can only win with one.

The same rules apply to all design limits. 15/15/15 with a SHOW.

Please send all submissions, questions, concerns, or requests for a
date to Plur@...

Thanks!

Its been a long time coming, and its finally time.

I’ve lovingly served as the Chair/Warden of Paupers for almost 5 years now, I think it is.  I have greatly enjoyed working for the members of Paupers and working with the members of the CHE.  It hasn’t been a bed of roses and cupcakes, but there are some very very good memories for me to take with me.

Effective immediately, I’m stepping down as Chair of Paupers.

Be well, all, and know I’ll be thinking of all of you with happy thoughts and no regrets.

Join House of Paupers on a quest for new alcohol. Always ones to be culturally aware, if it involves booze, members of House of Paupers will sojourn in Cysaegir on the 24th of Lumnea, a Feastday, at 8 in the evening as the elves measure time. Our goal will be to seek out what Aelotois drank in their homelands and if they managed to bring any out with them. No worries, we’ll also bring our own supplies in case winged things are reticent!
