Indeed the expansion was not reprinted.  I am happy to report that the original expansions do mate better with the second edition map, correcting the problem with the first edition map.

Apparently the expansion was not reprinted. Do the original expansions mate with the second edition map so as to correct the problem with the first edition game and expansion maps not matching properly.

Hi Phil,

I just created a FB page for high frontier. Utterly useless really. Only
reason I created it is because I kept putting high frontier on my list of likes,
and FB, in its ultimate cleverness kept looking at that and saying "we don't
have a game called high frontier in our records, so you must mean you like high
frontier high school". then FB would change it on me.

Got sick of that so I just created a HF FB page.

I mention it here only because now FB lists me as the admin and seems to think i
own the rights to the product or some nonsense like that.

So if you want to claim it later... just let me know.

Well thanks Jeffrey.  I would like to visit and endorse it.  I really don't understand the FB world but I certainly don't mind anyone promoting it in any fashion, thanks again.

In the game ROCKET FLIGHT, which was the precursor to High Frontier, Phil Eklund
postulated (as one of the more fringe science weapons) bioengineered insect
weapons. He noted that he had personally examined insects in an electron
microscope, removed them from the internal vacuum chamber, and was nonplussed to
discover that they were still alive.

He postulated genetically engineered insects that could survive in space, riding
aimed microwave beams using metalized moth wings, making mid-course corrections
with thrusters similar to the Bombardier beetle, then to attack sensors and
exposed equipment on the hapless enemy ship using diamond tipped mandibles.

So this recent article made me think:

My poster map arrived in the mail last Thursday from Zazzle.ca and I am
definitely very pleased with it. I chose the least expensive paper stock and
was suprised by how sturdy the paper is. It has a matte finish but is slightly
glossy.

I also noticed that there were some 'corrections' made. In particular, Europa
and Callisto are now size 8 instead of 9. This makes a very big difference when
planning missions because that crew rocket now has a much better chance of
direct landing on those sites.

Halley's comet is now more difficult to get to, but has that star on it which is
worth +10 points for a successful claim.

Speaking of the stars (Interstellar Science sites) the legend mentions that it
takes 2 such claims to end the game. Is that 2 claims for one player, or two
claims total between all players? Also, does this end the game immediately or
does it simply allow a player with two such claims to end the game by paying 5
WT?

I was pleased to see Chiron on the map but I admit I was a little surprised that
it is size 4. Did'nt think it was that dense. Likewise Quaoar's size of 8
surprised me as well. But I know there is a lot of new data from the Spitzer
telescope.

Overall I love this map and will be playing with it whenever possible.

Of course! I mean haven't you played DOOM? Clearly the moons of Mars are gateways to the underworld! That would be an interesting variant... We'd need a new faction UAC and their own crew card. Maybe specific glory points for Deimos and Phobos... And a special event result for when UAC has a factory on either moon and try to produce a black card: scientific experiment gone wrong...

Not a problem. As I said, my reasons for setting it up were entirely selfish.
It was entirely an exercise in training FB to understand what I meant when I
told it i was a fan of High Frontier.

The high frontier FB page topped off quickly at 7 likes. I assume those 7
people all probably monitor this yahoo group. ;P

I am trying to print the pdf version of the living rules, but I need a margin on
the right hand side (I think 0.75" will do) in order to bind them. I've tried
every print option at my disposal, but can't get this right. Shrinking to 93%
of original size puts the right amount of space, but on the wrong side of the
paper. That is, there's a nice margin created on the right-hand and bottom
sides of the printed page.

Does anyone have a good way to accomplish this without Adobe Pro?

I've not tried it with pdfs, but you can upload pdf to Google Docs and once
there there are options to change margins before printing.

There are also options to upload pdf and extract the text, which I assume will
then allow you to reformat as you require. I've not tried this though.

Neal,
Windows XP.

Mark,
There doesn't seem to be margin options for pdfs.  I tried to convert it in Google Docs, but it says it can only convert files up to 2 MB.  Good idea, though.

I think I'll try exporting the pages as images and setting them in PowerPoint to create a margin.  If that doesn't work, I'll just use the Word document version from the Yahoo group.  One thing I noticed about the Word version-- the document says it was updated November 16, 2011 but the file name seems to indicate it was updated January 4, 2012.

Once you've printed at 93% you could photocopy, being carefull to put the
margin on the left side.

I am grateful for the living rules, but I do wish the file section at Yahoo
was better maintained. It remains difficult to determine exactly which is the
most current version of each page.

It is also difficult to print the pages, even one page at a time is sufficent
to overwhelm my work printer, which is fully capable of handling 200+ page
documents, collated, front and back, multiple copies etc. I don't know
anything about printing, but I don't thik the problem is hardware, I think the
problem is incredibly dense pages and the format they are saved in.

Again, no wish to be ungrateful, but I do wish it was easier for me to keep my
rulebook up to date

Why not use a ring-binder and those plastic pockets/sleeves or, even better, a
flip-file (well, that's the South African name for them, probably called
something like a display book in other countries, but it is basically a book
where each page is an A4-sized see-through plastic pocket/sleeve - very useful
for holding photocopies and printouts of everything from recipes to sheet
music). This would allow you to print updates and replace pages very easily, and
you wouldn't have to worry about margins. Plus, the plastic helps to protect the
pages.

Have you tried rotating the page to an inverted view and printing it? I
think it prints out in the orientation you have in your view at least it
does in the print preview pane. I guess it'll throw the top/bottom margins
off, but it should put the long edge margins on the opposite side of the
text.

Yes, I thought the same thing.  But it only came out of the printer with the same margins.  Apparently those flip, too.

I just printed the Word document and bound that.  I think it's current, or at least more so than my April 2011 living rules I was using.

a book where each page is an A4-sized see-through plastic pocket/sleeve -
very useful for holding photocopies and printouts of everything from recipes
to sheet music). This would allow you to print updates and replace pages
very easily, and you wouldn't have to worry about margins. Plus, the plastic
helps to protect the pages.

on the wrong side of the paper. That is, there's a nice margin created on
the right-hand and bottom sides of the printed page.

I have a friend who is very much interested in buying High Frontier plus the
expansion. Now, I know HF recently got a revised reprint but I am at loss about
the expansion. Is it possible to buy one yet? Is there a reprint planned?

thanks

Victor, there are still HF expansions available in the US on Amazon.  These are good for the first or second editions. In the EU, I have only a few left that I am willing to part with.  I will send a Paypal request to those who ask me about the EU expansions.

Thanks, Phil, I just can't resist to brave these inhospitable sites :) .  Speaking about the sulfur volcanoes, I suppose their emission of gases aren't enough to block the use of a raygun (like the atmospheric sites do) , right?

Right you are Victor, its pretty much of a hard vacuum on Io, with just a glow of sulfur and SO2.  The sulfur is promptly stripped of its electrons, and the ions are stretched into a torus that circles Jupiter like a ring.

I'll mention that one radical theory, with unknown significance to HF, that postulates that the volcanos are not tidally-pumped internal activity on Io, but evidence of external electrical current flows between Jupiter and Io.

For HF it means you get to fly your space ship through a thin plasma sheet of ions that's moving enough current to help keep a moon partially molten.
Could play havoc with the electronics and or electro-plate the outside of your ship with sulphur.
So would give you a reason for having another hazard if you felt so inclined and you considered it different enough from the standard radiation hazards that are already around.

I could see that the tidal pumping/formation heat volcanism from Io would kick off the process then like a florescent tube once the current is started it does not need much to keep if flowing.
