My previous post was only a list of those pc running that week. As our
players each have 2 or more characters to chose from. For when one in
occupied on cult duties and is unavailable.

A more complete list of pc's used to date would be

Orlanth Adventurous 2
Ernalda the queen 2
Bevera 3
Vinga 4
Issares 1
Odayla 3
Chalana Arroy 1
Humakt 2
Earth Witch Shaman 1
Yinkin 2

Note our group usually has between 4 and 8 players.

Also there are a few characters that I know of that have been created or
converted from Runequest but not yet used. These include
Urox 1
Orlanth Adventurous 2
Chalana Arroy 1
Demalie Shaman 1
Eiretha Herder 1
Issaries 1

I got my copy of the Lunar Map in the post and it is... beautiful. So
atractive is this map that my girlfreind Vanessa, who does not play
RPGs, said: "That is really nice, you could put that up on our wall
if you got that framed." Coming from Vanessa that is a hell of a
compliment, trust me.

Arkat gets a pretty heavy bad rep out of HW so far, although does
appear to be in part a mixed message. Why is Arkat called the
Deceiver, and what do people have against him to have so slandered
his name?

Destroyed the bright god?
Slaughtered thousands in his pursuit of vendetta?
Destroyed cultures where it suited his purpose?
Betrayed (just about) everyone he came into contact with?
Subjected large areas of the continent to domination by trolls for years?

The fact that he arguably saved the world seems minor in comparison...

Cheers,
Graham

Arkat gets a bad rep from the Brithini because he caused trouble
within their social order and then abandoned their ways.

Arkat gets a bad rep from the Seshnegi because they gave so much
to support him in his crusade yet he deserts to the Orlanthi.
After many Malkioni still supported him in his last battles, he
sets up the Dark Empire of Stygia to menace true Malkioni
everywhere.

Arkat gets a bad rep from the Borists because he and his successors
persecuted them.

Arkat gets a bad rep from the Heortlings because they fought for him
because he promised liberation but left them in servitude to the
Trolls.

Arkat gets a bad rep from the Pelorians because he exterminated
Nysalor and brought a Empire of Peace and Plenty to an end.

Arkat gets a bad rep from everybody (except Safelster and the
Uz) because Gbaji told so many lies about him.

There will be a few, and when they sell out, there will also be forms

And there's just something more elegant about plotting and intriguing in
a comfortable, steamy bath than behind the shrubbery next to the Chief's

He comes from the west, joins the Heortlings and their God Humakt, but then
betrays them in becoming a troll and joining Zorak Zoran.

Isn´t that deceiving enaugh?

Related question:
If Arkat is the deceiver for most of the Heortlings, why does his name (Arkat

I got the impression from some writings (can't remember which, was it Gods
of Terror?), that Arkat, in some cultures, is even confused with Gbaji.
This may be in a literal sense or it may be in the sense that he went so far
in his quest to kill Gbaji that in the end there was little difference
between them. Either way, the name the Deceiver fits the bill.

He's the classic example of someone who started out trying to achieve
something for a common good and got so caught up in his quest that he lost
sight of all else, to the point of giving up his humanity. To the
Heortlings he's "the man who gave up his humanity to beat his enemy". To
them, I guess, it's a step too far.

I've always had a vaguely soft spot for Arkat (not that I know too much
about him), he always struck me as more of a tragic figure than a figure to
be despised. I mean, in his quest to prove that Nysalor's illumination is
evil and wrong, he became illuminated himself.

"He who fights with monsters might take care
lest he thereby become a monster.
And if you gaze for long into an abyss,
the abyss gazes also into you." -Nietsche

1 Issaries / Goldentongue merchant
1 Humakt / Makma Ran (sp?) warrior
1 Orlanth Adventurous / Desemborth warrior

A few others:

Laid waste to everything between the Western Ocean and Dragon Pass south
of the Rockwoods. His buddy Talor did the same NORTH of the Rockwoods
but he's actually still well liked up in Loksalm.

Slaughtered and corrupted the most fertile land in Genertela (Dorastor)

Destroyed deities and spirits which whole peoples relied on for survival
-- leaving them to starve.

Brought Sorcery to the Heortlings. (joy!)

Brought Pagan Practices to the Malkioni. (double joy!)

The bringing trolls to everyone seems to have been well covered by
others in this discussion.

Discovered and categorized the techniques for HeroQuesting that were
later used and abused by the Godlearners -- so that whole episode can be
laid at Arkat's door too!

Stole sacred myths and gave them to outisders who misused them. He did
this a lot.

Oh, and the elves (who sided with Nysalor) were burned and slaughtered
by him. They have long memories. Same goes for the Dwarfs.

The Dragonnewts probably DO like him, which among many peoples who hate
dragons, is another strike against Arkat.

Actually, the Trolls like him a fair bit. He tricked EVERYONE. Many
trolls believe he was a troll reborn as a human to do all the things he
did and bring secrets home. Of course, more conservative Trolls dont'

Languages don't change that readily? Words go in and out of fashion?
And, of course, it could have been "Argrath (spit)" in the 700's.

Arkat is a good example of 'to save the village, we had to destroy it'
-- but on a much, much larger scale.

Apparently none of the Finns have been following this thread yet, so
having grown up with periodic visits to my Finnish grandfather and
his traditional sauna, let me clarify something:

A sauna is *not* a steam bath.

Cheap north american imitation mostly don't get hot enough for
maximum effect, so people use a lot of steam to get the same effect,
but a proper sauna is not at all steamy. It is also so hot that the
uninitiated had best breath carefully, move slowly, and not sit
directly on the wood. You might dash a little water on the rocks for
a surge of apparent heat, but I seem to recall my grandfather doing
so almost never.

You sweat out the dirt, then the only question is how you get rid of
the sweat. Water is traditional, but a cultural variation where you
scrape yourself down after sweating would seem very appropriate to
yelmalio types--fire (in the form of heat) drives out the impurities,
and you scrape off the impurities AND water (in the form of sweat),
rendering yourself that much more pure.

One additional note for the culturally minded: from what I understand
the sauna was also the traditional sick room. Which makes sense from
a modern germ theory perspective when you think about how nice and
sterile it would probably be, as well as how easy it is to keep the
invalid comfortably warm. I would imagine that in sauna using
gloranthan cultures the same would apply, with perhaps additional
long term blessings/charms reinforcing the health bringing properties
of the sauna.

The romans, the turks, and no doubt others used steam baths. Same
generaly concept, but very different in feel. Much better for
mysterious plotting however, especially if you go to extremes on the
steam, so I'd vote for them being used in Dara Happa :)

I envy this poster: but she has a significant advantage over my
situation. She lives in an english speaking community.
In Italy (and in my family and ring of friends) the fact that
HeroWars and KoDP are in english is a major obstacle.
For my wife it is a great obstacle (she plays Warcraft, for instance,
because there the language is no problem, but in KoDP you simply
can't).

This is not a critique to anyone. I like KoDP and use it as a
Gloranthan Lore Encyclopaedia, but my situation is not that simple.

Are Vadeli so weel-known in Seshnelan history? They may be chaotic,

From what's been said, Storm Tribe has been at the printers for the last

Don't know about the release date for Sartar Rising! though. Inspection

Languages don't change that readily? Words go in and out of fashion?
And, of course, it could have been "Argrath (spit)" in the 700's.

Arkat is a good example of 'to save the village, we had to destroy it'
-- but on a much, much larger scale.

having only read this message (like a snippet of conversation overheard), it
seems that I've sampled un soupcent (?) of a rich plot. Is this so? Coz the
images that spring to mind are quite vivid....

And so much easier to be overheard -- "Wait, was that the towel boy? find

Harry (et all)

I have been fascinated with everything Greg ever wrote about Arkat and have
even run/played several characters who followed him.

I think that Harry's thoughts here are pretty much on the money. Except for
the illumination thing - Arkat was illumined from the beginning of the story
proper and that the quest was to destroy the deceiver and free the oppressed
minds (although this last phrase is arguably propaganda).

In my view, the only ones (exceptions will no doubt spring up like
Pythonesque conformists) connected with him who don't feel betrayed by Arkat
are the ones who followed him devoutly through all the stages
transformation. It is doubtful that the core group thought of themselves as
traitors. Instead, a 'higher' calling was felt by all, inspired by their
charismatic leader-by-example.

Harry, I love the quote from Nietzsche - wasn't that used in the X-Files?
Very emotive. Mulder was only saved by his deep relationship with Scully.
Maybe if Arkat had had a relationship on that level the story would be
carried on into the eighth season too. Or has it already gone that far?
Parallels between Mulder's abduction and Arkat's apotheosis spring to mind.
(sorry for the spoiler to those who didn't know)

Jeff, I'm getting two copies of your mail, seperated by almost an hour though.
Are you hitting send a second time an hour later or is something strange going
on with your mailer?

Am I the only one getting two Jeffs?

Harry.

Well, so far we haven't seen anything written on the trolls of
Ralios, who are about the only people in Genertela (west of Prax)
whom Arkat did not betray.

Last I heard, Storm Tribe was at the printer.

Obviously we'd love to have King of Dragon Pass translated into as
many languages as possible. But since it has over 462 000 words of
English text, nobody's been willing to do it. (And this ignores the
programming that would be necessary to accomodate languages with
different grammar than English, which I suspect is all of them).

I think one is more than enough.. <g>...but I'm afraid I'm getting
doubled up on the postings, too. Is poor bell canada to blame again,
Jeff?

(Though I think we do have more than one breed of Jeff if I'm not
mistaken).
