Re: [HackettstownChessClub] Hackettstown Fall Team Tournament, 2002

Note that Black can avoid the whole mess with 3...Nc6....but think of all the
fun you would miss then.

It takes a big man to publicize his hard-fought losses. This is why I try to
blunder badly once I know I'm lost; that way no one will be tempted to publish
such an 'awful' game. Usually I don't feel too well either.

Happy holidays and hohoho....ERM

Koss vs. Manekas 1-0. Published again at:

http://www.daytonabchcc.org/chessarchive/koss-manekas.htm

There's other entertaining information from the Star Ledger NewsPaper and ACN
Magazine:

http://njscf.org/starledger%20columns/Koss-Manekas.txt

such as the event and date, and other lines.

Here are quotes from the original ACN article. "Thirty years ago we headlined in
the Atlantic Chess News the creation of New Jersey’s newest expert, Ed Koss,
whom we nicknamed “Killer Koss,” similar to the old pro wrestling great Killer
Kowalski. We’ve joked about it over the years, and Ed, now active in the
Hackettstown Chess Club (Monday evenings, 7:30 to 12:00 at the Civic Center on
Main Street), still retains his aggressive chess instincts, that are completely
belied by him being one of the nicest guys in Jersey chess.

"He is also part of that old crew that loved the Vienna Game, especially the
Frankenstein-Dracula variation. This variation defies even computer analysis
because it is so unbalanced. Ed even shows you can get to it via the Alekhine
Defense.

"For the faint of heart, we have a recommendation: AVOID IT! How? Here’s a tip:
5...Be7 6.Nf3 Nc6 7.Nxe5 g6 8.Nxc6 dxc6 9.Qf3 0–0 10.0–0 Nf5 11.d3 Nd4 12.Qf4
Bd6! (as opposed to a5 13.Be3 Ne6 which is touted by Tseitlin and Glazkov as
equalizing, but is really slightly better for White) 13.Qh6 Nf5 (13.Qxd4??
Bxh2+) and Black is actually a little better.

"For the daring among you, play over this correspondence game—if you have the
nerve! Two bishops beat two rooks! Even computers get headaches trying to figure
this game out: Ekebjaerg-Timmerman, 91-93: 13.Qf3 Nd4 (varying from the Koss
game)14.Qg4 Bg7 15.Bd2 Bxa8 16.0–0–0 Bf6 17.Bb4 a5 18.Bxd6 Qxd6 19.Nh3 Qc6!! (e4
had been previously played and lost) 20.Ng5 a4 21.Bc4 b5 22.Nf7+ Kc7 23.Nxh8
Bxh8 24.h5 g5 25.c3 bxc4 26.cxd4 cxd3+ 27.Kb1 Qc2+ 28.Ka1 a3 29.Rb1 Be4 30.Qd1
exd4 31.Qf1 d6 32.f3 Bf5 33.Qc1 d2 34.Qxc2+ Bxc2 35.Rhd1 d3 36.Rxd2 Kb6!! White
Resigned as 37.h6 Ka5 38.Rf2 Ka4 39.Rd2 axb2+ 40.Rxb2 Ka3 with 41...Bxb2 and
Black mates.

"Is any of this a guarantee for Black? I wouldn’t bet a penny on it! In an
attempt to retain our sanity, we will stay away from this line.

Ed Koss is made of sterner stuff, however, and holds onto the material edge and
wins.

"Does Black have enough compensation to win after 10.Nxa8? Sure he does.

Is White capable of holding on to the material and winning the game? Sure he is.

Do we want more club reports and games like this? Sure we do! Keep ‘em coming!"
