To echo the others, many thanks to the Bristol gang at Lincombe Barn
for a fun day.
The inclement weather meant Callum's rugby match was cancelled so
rather than popping in to say hello I turned up for the full event.
I took the Grand Armee 40k with the marsh ridden terrain.
Game 1 against Tim Moore and the Daleks. Tim defended and sportingly
placed a river in the hope of having a bit or Water Lurker on Water
Lurker action but is wasn't to be as his WLurker got fragged by my
shooters early on. My Airboats and Aerial Hero ganged up on Tim's
Airboat and sent it to a galaxy far, far away. My aerials roamed the
field with impunity but stout defence by the Daleks took the game to
the wire. In the end I risked my Shooter general in an advance into
the river to draw Tim out; he obliged by meeting me in the water and
had a shot at exterminating my general for glory. But it wasn't to be
and my WLurkers leapt all over the Dalek general and dragged it
screaming to the bottom of the river.
Game 2 against Stephen Poole with an arabic army of Riders, Heroes,
Shooters and Spears. Stephen defended and refused to rise to my digs
over the lack of water features...or indeed any terrain... apart from
the very small bit I hid the army in. As Stephen adanced I did see an
opportunity to sacrifice an Airboat for a shot at his Hero General,
but having sacrificed the airboat I rolled a '1' and all aerials
refused to fly... losing me another airboat. So then I stayed hidden.
Stephen played the cautious game and manouevred for position over a
couple of turns but this allowed the Aerial Hero to make a couple of
sorties and knock off some riders. By then time was called and we
settled on the draw.
Game 3 saw the funniest game moment of the day and I think my quickest
defeat. Tom Curry was defending (no water this time either) with his
Rat army with 2 lovely Airboats, some Shooters, Warband and Hero. I
was confidant of this one as the line-ups were in my favour and Tom
seemed unsure how to play his Airboats. Turns out he needn't worry
about that as before the lines even met he shot my Shooter general and
threw in a support Shooter for good measure. I'd failed to realise my
general in the front line would roll a '1' to his '6'. Game over man!!
Much hilarity followed.
Game 4 against Peter James' Napoleonic British led by Wellington and
Sharpe... but finally I defended. As already mentioned by Peter;
marshes and rivers stuffed his deployment and 2 Water Lurkers did for
a fair few AP before he could re-group see off the WLurkers. Once
rallied Wellington's army bombarded my Aerial Hero with arcane magics
despite the river and he was captured, making it a very close game. My
PIPS were pretty good in this game and I was able to manouevre the
Airboats into position for a final assault on some British infantry
and won the day.
Many thanks to all my opponents forthe great games and I do hope to be
back next year.
