Here's my best cut:
Save the vector file as .wmf or .emf. (Metafile companion can
open/edit/save .emf and .wmf's pretty well.)
From FM, with an empty base map, select File Open, and select Windows
Metafiles (*.emf or *.wmf).
The file will open, but I have noticed that Fractal Mapper does an
overall pretty lousy job of opening metafiles.
Assuming they open OK, you can create a symbol and export it as a .fmp
file.
Ordinary cut and paste does not work. FM only pastes as bitmaps.

I had entertained notions of creating tons of maps and dozens of
custom tools for Fractal Mapper, but my schedule has gotten so crowded
I am shutting down the PBEM game I was going to draw the map for. Long
story short, does anyone want to take over as moderator of this list?
If not, I'm going to shut it down and let the NBOS people handle this
sort of thing. Not that their list is much better, but I had really
hoped that I would have been able to devote more time to this one.

OK, for all you FM'ers out there, here are two answers to "growing"
your symbol collection:
1) Big box of art 615,000 (www.hemera.com): About $50, FULL of vector
clip art that is consistent in "look and feel" with the symbols
provided by FM. Easy export of .wmf .emf's. No "top view"
architectural symbols that I could find, though.
2) Smartdraw (www.smartdraw.com) provides thousands of symbols, many
of an architectural or technological nature. It can be downloaded as
a trial package, or purchased for $70-$180 ($180 gives you their
entire symbol collection). Symbols can be exported as .wmf and .emf,
as needed.

I'm looking to grow my collection of symbols by finding .wmf files,
presumably from clip art collections, and editing them to fit.
Can anyone recommend locations or purchaseable CD/DVD products that
would fit this need?
Thanks in advance!
Ah, if only I could get the best of both worlds:
www.dungeoncrafter.com is a freeware tool with lots of support on the
web. It's bitmap based, essentially a bitmap drawing tool with lots
of tiles of different kinds. But it (currently, v1.4.1) doesn't
scale, doesn't hyperlink maps (I love that feature of FM), etc. It's
just a drawing tool, albeit nicely specialized for drawing dungeons, etc.
I've used dungeoncrafter tiles to make fill patterns in FM, which is
fairly useful. But I've yet to figure out how to use the
extraordinary diversity of tiles to make useful objects in FM, because
they are all bitmaps.
Any thoughts out there on how to get the best of both of these tools?

Cool! I hope you have more time to devote to it than I do. Between remodelling
my living room, making DVD labels from MST3K collection, and working on various
other pet projects, converting my homebrew maps over to Fractal Mapper has been
too far down the list to even contemplate. :/

Hi all,
My name is Guy Hoyle, and I just bought Fractal Mapper and Fractal
World explorer, and am looking forward to exchanging some ideas and
techniques here. If anybody is interested, the RPGs I usually play
are RuneQuest, HeroQuest, and Risus.

Ah, one interesting factoid, under Windows:
- Get pdf995 (pdf995.com), which allows one to print to a .pdf file.
-Install a postscript printer, tell it to print to a FILE, allows one
to print a .ps file.
-Get Ghostscript, which allows one to read .ps and .pdf files, and
(latest version) has conversion tools.
Between these three (free) tools, a lot of image manipulation is
possible, in vector format.
Corrections/clarifications always appreciated by experts/afficianados.
Roger that, for all three responses: Didn't know that photoshop was
bitmap only, nice to know about CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator as
options, still learning about online resources. Seems to me (in my
newbie opinion) that collections of symbol sets would be handy -- it's
just fun to have options.

There aren't many free or open source vector drawinmg tools that are worth
anything. OpenOffice <http://www.openoffice.org/> comes with a drawing
application, but I have not used it (although I use OpenOffice all the time for
spreadsheets and word processing -- OpenOffice is much better than Word and
Excel, in my opinion, and it's free).
There's also a program called SodiPodi that I couldn't figure out how to use (it
has the weirdest user interface), and there's a branch of it called Inkspace
<http://inkscape.sourceforge.net> that looks promising, but that I have not
actually used, either.
There's also a very simple diagramming and vector drawing app called Diagram
Designer that you might take a look at
<http://meesoft.logicnet.dk/DiagramDesigner/>.
Other than that, I'd suggest trying to find a cheap or used copy of Adobe
Illustrator or Corel Draw (I use Adobe Illustrator, myself, because there just
isn't a good open source alternative yet, in my opinion). Sorry I couldn't be
more help.

Windows Metafile is a vector format - so Photoshop can't export to it,
as it handles bitmaps only. You need an application like CorelDraw or
Designer.

I use CorelDraw for vectored stuff, and it exports directly to .wmf.
Photoshop seems to be more limited. If you want to experiment, you can
email me a .psd file and I'll see if CorelDraw can import it, then export
to .wmf. (If you do this, *plesae* be careful to not send it to the list.)

Have you looked through the NBOS Online archive? There's a few there, of
various quality and subject matter. I think we should encourage Ed to set
up some sort of category attribute for uploads that can be used for
filtering. I can also cheerfully offer web space to host such things,
though it would be better to keep it consolidated in one place (and NBOS
Online is the obvious place).

May I ask what the best way to export into .wmf is? I
have .ps, .pdf, Adobe Photoshop and several other resourcs, but can't
seem to get one of them to output a .wmf or .emf file.
In my comparisons of FM with CC2-Pro (demo), while I certainly can
appreciate the power of CC2-Pro, I find FM easier to use and of
course much less expensive. However, finding symbol sets for FM has
been quite a challenge. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks to Terry Austin on rec.games.frp.misc, I have a solution to my
symbol import dilemma:

Thanks, Terry! This means I can resume work on importing my symbol
library into Fractal Mapper. *Very* cool.

This has been a serious obstacle. I wanted to go through the various
symbols I have collected over the past few years and convert them to
Fractal Mapper format, but just haven't found a way to import vector
objects. I haven't had the time to sit and redraw them by hand
(although the quality would be better). I haven't even been able to
get bitmap symbols to work properly: when I save them as symbols and
then open them, they wind up being a wildly different size, and are
sometimes dictorted (stretched or compressed in one direction).
I'm kind of disappointed about this. I was hoping that paying for
Fractal Mapper would save me a lot of time and trouble over a free
mapping program like AutoRealm. So far, I'd have been better off just
sticking with AutoRealm. I may wind up going back to it.

I have a bunch of mapping symbols I am trying to import into Fractal
Mapper, but I can't seem to find a way to imprt any vector objects. In
my other drawing programs, you can paste a vector object (a *.wmf
file, for example), but I don't see a way to do this in Fractal
Mapper. ANyone have any ideas?

Please forgive this newbie question, but I just purchased FM yesterday.
I used FWE to generate a world and want to break the continents up into separate
sub-maps,
but haven't been able to find out how to separate and save them.
Any suggestions or pointing to where it explains it in the docs would be
appreciated.
I'm probably overlooking something obvious, so please don't flame me too badly.
Thanks.

Subject: [nbos] Dealing with boundaries
Okay, I'm in need of help. I've been working on this for a week or so,
and I'm past the point of frustration... :(
Situation: I have an existing continent map. I am attempting to create
terrain boundaries. (Works just like political boundaries, but for
terrain.) Because I used an existing continent map, I had to use the
second option for creating the boundaries as described in the "Creating
Political Boundries (sic) with PolyPolygons". (Why two "Poly's",
anyway?) (Doing this kinda sucked, as I was hoping to avoid the overhead
of all the combined polygons, but life goes on... :)
Unfortunately, I'd like for the terrain boundaries to be a little more
subtle, so I set the line on the boundary to clear. Doing that, though,
causes the edge of the boundary that is against the original continent's
definition to be messed up due to the two objects sharing space and the
lower object having a line.
I could try cloning my original continent object into a polyline and
"Bring to front" of the boundaries, but that just seemed like it was too
much. Is that the only option?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Come to think of it, I think "Structures" would be better. Not all

Although the psuedo-perspective symbols aren't really isometric. Can
you think of a better word for that style of map? "Plan" is
descriptive of a top-looking-stright-down map (where trees would be
circles, more or less). What's a good word for the kind of map where
the bottom edge of a forest has visible tree trunks?

To make symbols easier to manage, I will be organizing them by style
and type. Because uploading/downloading dozens and dozens of
individual symbols would be tedious, each collection of symbols will
be stored in 7-Zip format (a free compression utility compatible with,
but much superior to, zip -- <http://www.7-zip.org/>). Below is the
organiztion I'm currently planning. If you have any suggestions, feel
free to offer them.
Dungeon
Caverns, traps, and other dungeon related items
Interior
Interior furnishings such as beds, tables, and doorways
Nautical
Ships, waves, islands, and other seagoing items
Terrain
Hills, mountains, swamps, and deserts
Urban
Buildings of various sorts
Wilderness
Tents, campfires, and so on
I also think we should have some way to tell isometric (forced
perspective, like most of the Campaign Cartographer maps) symbols from
plan (looking top-down) symbols. Maybe the file name? Like this:
Dungeon
|- isometric_style01.7z
|- isometric_style02.7z
|- isometric_style03.7z
|- plan_style01.7z
|- plan_style02.7z
\- plan_style03.7z
What do you think?
