Set during Ariel, when Jayne sells off River and Simon. The rescue attempt is a bit too late, and River is seperated from Jayne and Simon, who are then tortured to get information. How has River been doing, about the crew of the Serenity, and so on.

Simon and Jayne are barely alive when Zoe and Mal come to rescue them, but they are brought to Serenity, where they recover. Mal is ready to kill Jayne for his betrayal, but Simon convinces Mal that Jayne might be useful getting River back.

They gather information, and make their way towards the Academy, where the crew is sure River is being held.

However, River was brought immediatly to the Academy, where the mess that they had made of River's mind is corrected. After all, they had made her feel everything, when they were truly trying to make her feel nothing.

The operation appears to be a success, although the Alliance is wary of applauding before they are certain of their results. They send River on her one and only test - to kill the crew of Serenity.

As they near the Academy, however, Serenity comes upon a beat up, abandoned ship, only big enough to hold one person. It is radioing for help, the voice coming from the ship - River's...
