This reflects very well the way Caesar tended to describe his forces
in terms of numbers of cohorts as much (or more) than by legion. And
since the Roman armies fielded by Caesar and others of the Late
Republic tended to be rather large (4-10 legions, or 40-100 cohorts),
I have adopted a ratio of 500 men per base for my FoG battles.
Since legions were also frequently reported as being understrength, I
assume 5 slightly understrength cohorts per 4-base BG, and 2 such BGs
per LRR legion. This works very nicely on the tabletop, and allows
me to recreate large-scale historical battles of the Late Republic
with armies in the 800- to 1000-point range.
Just another testament to the flexibility of the top-down approach
adopted by the authors of FoG!
Cheers,
