The issue of German u-boats in the Pacific is an interesting one. A
number of the boats were based here in Singapore, and on the South
coast of Malaysia (then "Malaya").

The u-boat crews seem to have been in a trick relationship with
their japanese allies. A number of the u-boat crews were very
unhappy with the way the japanese treated allied prisoners of war
(who were used as forced labour in the dock areas). However, when
Germany surrendered in May of '45, some of the u-boat crews in
Singapore continued to fight on with the Japanese. There is at
least one recorded incident of a german U-boat crew shooting down an
allied bomber over Singapore after Germany had officially
surrended. Politics makes strange bed-fellows I guess.
