Hi,

Would a reasonable assumption for Prussian Cuirassier Horse colors be
traditional brown and black with grey's for trumpeters?

Sincerely,
Jim in San Francisco

Hi,

I'm looking to start an Everway online game and wondering where I could get the
info needed to upload. I've actually got the visionary game at home but no-one I
know are into RPG's, so an online game on yahoo groups seems like the best
course of action.

Any help would be great, thank you.

Hi Alex, and welcome,

I'm not sure what info you need to upload upload. There are character sheets in
the file section. The links section has at least one link to a character making
guide. You can't (legally) upload any of the cards or other copyrighted
information, but there are other ways.

I've run Everway online, using IRC and other real-time chats. Players and I
find images online and post link to 'em for pictures. For the fortune deck...
well, I just draw. I used to tell the players every time I drew and the result,
but over the years I've become a bit lazy about that.

Back in the days of Rubicon, Evan Sass (Hi, Evan!) made an online widget which
would draw a card. It was imperfect (it drew from the complete deck every time)
but cute. Once, I made a script in IRC which would draw a card and list it. No
pics, just "War - Reversed (Evil Effort)" and whatnot. It would remember until
I got to the Usurper, then reset. Unfortunately, I needed quite a bit of
outside help to make it, so when I lost it I couldn't redo it on my own. :(

In the long run, it's easier just to have my deck by the keyboard.

Hope that helps,

John

The best site is Rob Barret's Everweb
-https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/rwb/www/gaming/everweb/

Pretty much everything online will either be there or on one of the
linked sites (do download Martin Teply's Reference Guide to the
Fortune Deck if you haven't already. )

I wonder if anyone out there still plays Everway? and if so how many?
The number of players, and the fact the game is long out of print with no
reprint option possible does not detract from its ground breaking status I
believe.

For me, I just dont do very much over-the-table role play at all any more. But I
have noticed that most of the Yahoo groups lists I subscribe to have fallen to
almost zero traffic over the last two years.
Is that because folks dont use lists the way they used to? If so what do they
use instead? *Interested*

I don't play, though I'd love to, extent of play has been a girlfriend
creating a character with me (that showed how good the system was that she
totally got, when she doesn't like rpg's normally).

I mainly use forums for discussion as it's easier to view and track
different discussions - also running a discussion on say rpg.net would draw
more people in as they see the constant discussion about the game - or not!

I haven't played Everway in years. I feel that much of the innovation it
brought to gaming is being expressed in other, newer games.

As to the list ... most of my gaming discussion is going on on various RPG
podcasts forums, such as the Fear the Boot forums.

The two main problems with pursuing Everway is that it strongly relied on
art cards which are all copyrighted and secondly, the current Everway
copyright holders cannot be reached / have not made so much as an
announcement or anything. So, we have a game that is not being developed or
supported, is not adaptable to open content conversion, and is not going to
be placed into the public domain. At the same time, we are in a sort of
'golden age' of innovative RPG design and production.

If I'm going to spend my time promoting a game system to my group and trying
to convince them to play something ... I think I can get a lot more buy-in
with something else. If I'm going to try and develop materials for a game
system for publishing on the web or even with a limited audience ... I'd get
a lot more interest with a different system. But, if Kat wants to run
Everway at a convention that I'm attending - then I'll probably sign-up and
have fun!

I still play. Moreover, my experience with Everway informs all of my gaming to
a large degree. When we play my weekly supers game, we're still playing
Everway. Sure, Fire, Earth Air and Water have been replaced with Brawn, Guts,
Moves and Heart. But I still use the fortune deck (I'm too damn lazy to make my
own special deck), and the laws of Karma and Drama.

I imagine I'll always be playing Everway in one form or another.

John

Completely agree. I have three copies left after buying some when they
hit the remainder bookshops in the UK and were selling for a couple of
UKPs each.

I am looking to run a game of it sometime later this year, so count me
in the active category!

I just had a discussion with someone about Yahoo Groups vs
other methods of discussion. I've seen
quite a few groups moving to social networking sites like Facebook or
Ning. I have been reluctant to follow
suit because e-mail lists are the most convenient method for me. I can read
them at work, and the messages
come to me. I don't have to go chase
down a group on FB and see that there are 0 messages.

But, apparently not everyone agrees with me.

As for Everway, I sadly never played it. I bought the game. I am greatly
interested by it, but I have
never spent the effort to get a campaign going. *sigh*

While I'm loathe to participate in things like Facebook and myspace and whatever
other newfangled thing people are twittering about these days, there IS
something to be said for keeping ones options open. The best way to reach
people is to use the same medium they do.

So... if anyone wants to start up an Everway twitter or whatever, that'd be
awesome. But I'll also continue to maintain this group.

I picked up Everway early this year on Ebay after hearing about it several
times on RPGnet. With two different gaming groups, I've pulled it out in
between games to make characters (we were making characters just for fun
rather than as a precursor to a campaign). It didn't make an impression on
the first group, but the second group got so excited that one player
tracked down his own copy of Everway and I'll hopefully be running a
campaign for the group in the next month or two.

Jon, thanks for asking! I was so pleased to see something from the list in my
mailbox--esp. since it motivated me to post the new thing in the files that I've
been meaning to post for several months.

In short: yep, I'm playing Everway. Ran four sessions (a story arc) in
June-July, and I'm getting set to run another in October (when it's my turn to
GM again). Before June it had admittedly been three or four years, barring a
few not-great one-shots.

I did some soul-searching in the spring and realized that the best games I ever
ran were Everway games, but that I needed to do something a little different
with the rules to accommodate my changing tastes and those of my players. I've
posted the result in the Files--Source Material section, if anyone is
interested. It includes: a revision of the element scales and a new thing to do
with the cards; a reinterpretation of the traditional four schools of magic and
write-ups for four new ones; some new thinking about hero
development/advancement; something new to do instead of specialties (kind of
folding Sharpening Focus into them, but more epic); some ideas about systematic
ways to spread authority around the table and get the players narrating; and
general irresponsible disregard for tradition and the game as written. It won't
be everyone's cup of tea, and I'll be the first to argue that Everway is already
pretty perfect as it is. Make of it what you will.

Vis a vis setting: I'm playing in something very like the orthodox
Everway-verse, but in my version Everway is a decadent conquering power--the
Glorious Empire in the Spherewalker Sourcebook meets the Lunar Empire from
RuneQuest. In fact, my first game with this group and these rules was set in an
adapted version of Griffin Mountain from RQ, except with a colossus (from Shadow
of the Colossus) thrown in. It was just about the awesomest Everway I've run
since Bill Clinton was in office.

In October the heroes will be in Everway proper, and they'll be dealing with
nasty local politics, and some just plain nasty locals. Can't say more--I know
at least one of them reads this list occasionally...

Anyway. Back to y'all.

Jack

Hi,

Good question Jon - nice to see some acitivity here!

I haven't started yet! Discovered the game 6 months ago but I'm deep into
Dragon Warriors at the moment so it has to wait.
But it looks promising. I really enjoy the idea and the artwork. The rules I
cannot comment yet.

Warmly,
Joakim (Sweden)

Thanks to everwayone who replied to my post (hi to all you old familiar names
who are still out there!).
Good to know Everway is still being played.

I think I would agree with one poster in that for me pretty much all of my more
recent gaming (which apart from a try-out of RISUS, has mostly been with home
brewed rules lite systems, often NOT fantasy of the S&S type)has been very
heavily influenced or informed by everway in that:
---I usually use some kind of mechanic comparable to element score comparisons
and drama, karma, etc
---I often use some kind of fate cards

but unlike Everway in that
---I dont regularly use the Everway setting. Even when I use a fantasy setting
that could be part of the Everway multiverse, I usually have it as a stand alone
one-off sphere.

--- I never use "vision card" style images for character creation. (Although for
some games I asked players to fill a series of small text boxes describing
scenes important in their character histories)

I do use Facebook, but dont see how that could much help Everway. I dont know
anything about Twitter except that it is the "latest thing". I dont use any
other boards except the one for the Live Action game I help to run. I'm open to
ideas however, and would be happy to contribute to any promotion etc.

It is a shame that everway seems locked away for now, maybe one day someone will
decide to do something with it - even a pdf release of the cards and the
companion would be very rewarding now I suspect.

Everway continues to inspire me as a great example of an rpg that doesn't look
like an rpg, and when I finally get around to developing a card led rpg it will
no doubt be due in part to the experience of everway. I think one of its
strengths is the image cards to inspire characters and anyone can pick up a pack
of art cards for any genre in a comic shop or con or even use an art book or
even flick through vogue or a national newspaper! Yep thought of ripping out
pages from a pile of magazines as your art instead?

My day job is as a creative director so the design style of everway is also
something that attracts me

As someone who has the opportunity to develop games that will actually get
released I've looked at doing a card based rpg several times over the last
couple of years and have a couple of concepts bouncing around with people. Its
not as easy due to the cost of doing cards in a professional manner - so many
rpg's are supported by pdf sales theses days unless they are big licences like
the doctor who game that justifies a box set.

I do think there are concepts in everway that have been superceded by more
contemporary games, there are ways I would make it yet more commercial to appeal
to a wider audience and not lose the mainstream rpg audience. If anyone wants to
be involved in the on-going discussion do drop me a line - I won't be using this
forum to discuss this project as it should be about everway and not other ideas.

If anyone starts or contributes to an everway discussion on a forum like rpg.net
though can I suggest you post a link on this group so we can all jump in and
show some love?

Cheers!

'Lo all. Still here, lurking. Not actually playing Everway at the moment, but
would like to try it with my current gaming group sometime soon. I think it'd go
down quite well (one player has played before, and I know she likes it), but
we're up to our necks in D&D at the moment, and nobody has the time for a second
game. At the end of the current campaign (which might be a while yet), I plan to
run a collaborative world-building game using "Dawn of Worlds". If the resultant
world looks like something well suited to Everway, I'll pitch it to the players
then...

Good to hear people are still playing, or at least have an interest :)

I re-watched Hero the other day:
Is any one else of the opinion that it is the most "Everway" film that ever
there was?
That scene with the calligraphy school, and the brush being like the sword... I
thought that was just SO Everway. I know I am obsessed with Wuxia, but to me it
was the very Essence of Everway, even if I dont actually KNOW what the essence
of Everway really is.

I think Hero is a good candidate...but then there are precious few films that
are in Everway's neighborhood. My own favorite candidate would be Princess
Mononoke. I'm generally not a big anime fan, but that movie...wow...and it just
feels like Everway to me.

I've always been partial to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as an
Everwayesque story. Of course, I have a weakness for involved flashbacks,
which Hero also provides.

But - and think about this a second, guys - what about Shaolin Soccer and
Kung Fu Hustle? Alter the settings slightly and you have two FANTASTIC
Everway stories. Especially Shaolin Soccer...

The heroes arrive in a realm dominated by the people's love for sport. One
team dominates, using skill, but also underhanded tactics and illegal
enhancements. This dishonesty has infected the realm, causing the people to
shift their attitudes. Only a few denizens - and the Heroes of course - can
see what's happening. The heroes are approached by a broken down old man
with a proposition - with their unusual skills, the heroes might just make
the perfect team to challenge the reigning champions.

The usurper is.... The Referee? Upright, he represents objective, vigilant
watchfulness. A good clean fight, if you will. Reversed, he represents
undue favor.

Not sure about that usurper. But the setup is perfect for getting a group
of heroes involved AS A GROUP.

IMO, YMMV, ETC. :)

Okay, what else?

John

Well I must say I'm not sure I can condone of Anything involving soccer...

But: If we are going further down the Wuxia / Kung Fu flick inspiration line:
What about Kung Fu panda? Although of course a silly animal animation... but
its atention to detail and respect for the genre means it is also a very fine
Kung Fu movie indeed. And what a great and terrifying baddie it has! What a
great villain or nemesis dont you think?
The story of the movie would make an ideal adventure for 1 player as it stands.

But maybe Furry Everway is just going too far? ...

I'm not much of an anime fan either, but Princess Mononoke is a good
one.

The defense calls Vision Cards 37, 38, 39, 40, and 41 from the original Everway
boxed set, and says heck yeah on the animal people in Everway. (Esp. card 37,
the tiger warrior.)

On the other hand, I respectfully reject the "furry" designation--beast fables,
beast people, etc. predate "furry" and "anthropomorphics" by some thousands of
years, and cross-culturally.

Kung Fu Panda was a surprisingly terrific movie. I think it works better as an
Everway backstory than an adventure, but there's ample fodder in there for a
game. Kung fu movies always make me want to define new magic schools based on
different kung fu styles... crane school, tiger school, etc.

---Yes yes, of course. Talking animals, animals with human attributes, and
humans with animal attributes are indeed pretty universal in folklore, tales and
myth. Some of these might even pre-date Usagi Yojimbo comics... :oP

---Yes! Kung Fu panda is great. Sure, I'm not sure I would ever use a published
work actually straight as an adventure (thats just not my style... I never get
it at all when folks playing licenced RPGs based on a film or show want to play
the ACTUAL characters from the show?), but as a setting/backstory it is awesome.
I'm all about that Kung-Fu styles thing... which was my motive for running a
game in the chinese-esque "Five Kingdoms" setting discussed here some years ago.
Although I did fu ability as powers rather than schools (back to that old water
chestnut!)
Anyhow. I've made a long post, mostly just to say, Jack, (as usual) I agree with
what you are saying!
