I like the detail and the breathing room... not TOO much detail. This
is my new campaign world. However, I do have two peeves.

1) a complete calendar with days of the week would have been helpful

2) and to me this is a cardinal sin for a product like this that hits
the mark just about everywhere else... WHERE'S the frick'in
INDEX???!!! I Hate it when game designers omit this. In a work of this
size its ridiculous to not have one, and IMHO renders much of it
useless. Maybe you read something that interests you, but how do you
find it again when you need to? Drives me crazy.

I agree, a calendar would be very helpful and one of these days I need to get around to creating one myself.

I also agree that an index would have been incredibly helpful.  This is something that could be rectified by Goodman Games though if they were to release one online.  I’m curious, though, how well the world is doing as far as sales go?  I am very hopeful that they increase their support of  the world with additional products though having their modules show exactly where they are located in the world of Aereth is greatly, greatly appreciated.

I really love this world because it seems to have just the right amount of detail without leaving the DM room to make it his own.  I have run campaigns in the Forgotten Realms for years and always felt held back because of all the novels dictating history.  I know I could have just ignored that but never was able to really do it.  With Aereth there are details there but lots of room to fill in the other things that can uniquely make it your own.

Wayne

Ken, the editor, is working on an index. We kinda got sidetracked with
Castle Whiterock, the 500-page doozy which is taking up everybody's time.
And don't worry, it WILL have an index. The DCC #35 index will be released
as a web freebie whenever we get a chance, probably after Whiterock goes to
the printer.

I was hoping that was the case. Thanks! I'll spread the word! I sure hope there will be more on Aereth as well. A series of Gazetteers like there were for the old Mystara series would rock!

Castle Whiterock is slated for release at GenCon. It will be a boxed
set containing a LOT of material...a massive dungeon,a gazetteer,
fancy fold-out maps, and more.

The official announcement can be found here:

I'm not sure what the final price will be (deferring to Joseph here),
but I'm certain that it will be available in stores. If you can't
make GenCon, ask for it from your Friendly Local Game Store.

Also, the "companion module," DCC #51.5 "The Sinister Secret of
Whiterock," is one of the Goodman Games contributions to Free RPG Day,
and it's written by our own Harley Stroh.

Here is a link for info on Free RPG Day:

If your FLGS is participating, you might be able to get some Whiterock
flavor early. If they're not participating...why?

Whiterock is slated for store release in November. The current plan for the
boxed set is to include four 128-page books detailing the dungeon, a 64-page
Gazetteer of the surrounding area, a 32-page booklet of maps, another
booklet of player handouts, a fold-out map of the town of Cillamar... and
probably some other stuff I'm forgetting... all for the low, low price of
$99.99!

OMG! I am Soooo in! I love Mega-dungeons.

I hate the Forgotten Realms, but I have loved Waterdeep and
Undermountain since they were intoduced, lo those many years ago. I
ran a long time Waterdeep campaign for over 4 years (same players).

I haven't ran anything for a while now, except for a DCC here and
there... this has me intrigued. I purchased DCC # 35 a while back,
and loved it, so I'm all in for this!!

BTW... Hey Joe! Whats the ETA on that index for DCC#35?

Thanks,

Dave

Castle Whiterock is setting-generic, like all DCCs (except, arguably,
DCC #35, our campaign setting).

It makes use of some terms and concepts from DCC #35, but it is
explained that all this information is optional, and the GM is free to
substitute or change any of it as he or she sees fit.

To put a fine point on it: you do not need to own DCC #35, or any
other DCC, in order to enjoy Castle Whiterock.

(Enjoying White Castle, however, requires courage and a cast-iron
stomach. Those sliders kill me.)

Ken was making good progress, but then Whiterock came along. You'll be
pleased to know that Whiterock does have an index, a very thorough one -- so
no worries there. And it's actually a fun index because it has page numbers
like "520" showing up in it! Once Whiterock is past we will get back on the
DCC #35 index (as well as some other things we had to put aside to hit these
deadlines).

As the author, I'm biased on the first I'd recommend - DCC #14 Dungeon Interludes. It's six adventures in one, and helps weave an ongoing plot over a larger campaign, or they can be played completely independently.

DCC #5 - Aerie of the Crow Gods is awesome stuff, and one of my personal favorites.

DCC #17 - Legacy of the Savage Kings. All kinds of awesomeness.

These give a great representation of the GG style and also have some strong old school flavor that makes the DCC style so tasty to gamers.

I've not seen a DCC that I didn't like.  You might want to look at the adventure finder on the Goodman site.  Its a good tool.

PS - Is anybody else getting excited about the DCC Tournament this year?  I'm STOKED!!!

This is my current campaign:

The party: Human Fighter, Dwarf Fighter, Human Priestress, Human
Wizard, Human Thief.

Current Campaign Setting : World of Greyhawk 1983 version, Wild Coast
Area

Mood: Sword and Sorcery with some dark fantasy, Pirates, slavers,
Underworld and Greyhawk Guild of Thieves..

Modules used:
Prelude, some homebrew Greyhawk city Guild of thieves adventures
(lev1)
DCC 39: The Ruins Of Castle Churo(Which I use the DM Screen)(lev1)
DCC 1 Idylls of the Rat king(lev2)
U 1 Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh(lev2-3)
U2 Danger in Dunwater mixed with some U3 The Final Enemy parts(lev3-4)
DCC3 The Mysterious Tower mixed with some Ghost Tower of Inverness
parts(lev4-5)
DCC 27 Revenge of the Rat King(lev 4-5)
A1-A4 Slave lords series with alot of home modifications, shorter and
centered around the slave trafic from the west coast to Pomarj.(lev 5-
7)
DCC 37 The Slithering Overlord(6-8)
DCC20 Shadows in Freeport (7-9)

Explanations: I use The 1983 Greyhawk box because I prefer prewar
Greyhawk.About the references I enjoy F Leiber, HP Lovecraft and
J.Vance universes so I tried to catch some of their elements to add
in my Campaign mood, I selected the AD&D and DCC Modules to fit this.

Feel free to ask any question, also I am interested to learn about
your own DCC / Greyhawk / old school campaigns.

My current campaign: West to the Empire

The party: 0th level characters - human warrior, half-elf warrior, dwarf psychic, human aristocrat, human medium.

We are set in the DCC world as described in DCC35 and have started with the Halls of the Minotaur from the boxed set. This is a Pbem campaign I'm running through a yahoogroup. We started in early June. I expect that as I go along I will be incorporating monsters/ideas from the Known World/Mystara setting as it is my default back-up campaign. I run the module as structured but swap out monsters to keep my characters on their toes. I'm thinking of changing the minotaur to a monster-level one from Savage species to make the final battle a little easier as a minotaur could easily kill with a first hit.

I see that Malice of the Medusa is available at Rpgnow.

Has anyone picked it up?
What part of the DCC world is it set in?

Does Goodman Games supply PDF copies to print subscribers? I notice that Paizo is doing this with their Gamesmastery and Pathfinder subscriptions and Monte did on Ptolus as well.

At what point are you at with your campaign? What modifications did
you make to A1-4?

Tim
----
At this point we have finished character creation, Characters are
striving to find a job at the Green Dragon Inn in Greyhawk City.
The Rogue has done some minor solo missions for the Guild, The wizard
signed in the Guild of Wizardry, the others bought an adventurer
licence at the trader union.
---
Modifications to A1-A4, and many other things ...

I am very demanding with the modules I use because I try to keep a
certain mood in my campaign. Also there are some precise settings
offered to the current low levels characters:

- City of Greyhawk and its surroundings, sewers and Cairn hills will
be used. This is why I modified DDC 1"the Idylls of the Rat King" so
it take part in a part of the sewers of the city.
- The main plot is the Slavers activities in the Wild Coast, Their
Base is in the Pomarj, slaves are carried oversea by pirats ships,
you can see it as a criminal network, with spies, slaves catchers,
thugs, sailors, officers and masterminds(located in Pomarj)
- I modified the U2 and U3 so the lizards caverns are used for slaves
trafic, the sahuagins catch the slaves and raid the coasts.
- I heavily modified the A1-A4, I got rid of all the things, first
some of the slaves are sold at the market in Highport, the unsold
ones are then led deeper in the lands, used as workforce by orcs,
duergars and drows, thus there is an underworld connection near the
Slave lords Den. I didn't like the lake town of the original module,
so I created my own Den.Also, I created some new slavelords,
comprising a wererats rogue, a Beholder, a drow fighter/rogue and a
half-orc warlord.(I used both Goodman games guides to beholders and
wererats in my campaign)
The Beholder is the criminal mastermind, he has a mindflayer majordomo
(all in a Jabba the hut style..)I also included an underworld town
(trading center) not far from the Slavers den, with various evil
denizens, including a tribe of grey skinned kobolds who serves as
town protectors led by a Deep Dragon named the "Great shadow
death"...characters at this point are not encouraged to try sack the
town.. they will die in utter suffering if they try.. but they can
visit it if they can manage some disguise and pose as human slavers
and keep a low profile...Near this town the characters will also be
able to visit the ruins of deep gnomes city with strange devices..
alas this place is haunted...They better not linger here either...

- Dealing with DCC3 The Mysterious Tower I added some features I
liked in C2 "the ghost tower of Inverness".. the chess game part
among others..

- All others DCC modules,DCC 27 "Revenge of the Rat King", DCC
37 "The Slithering Overlord", DCC20 "Shadows in Freeport" are left
unchanged for now...

When all this modules will be finished, it would take at least some
years.. I guess, I plan to make the characters twart some evil
cultists and devil worshippers plans, possibly travel to the bandits
kingdoms and Horned Society and work as Greyhawk agents, til they won
their own kingdom by their own hands, but this is another story ...
---
Also, you may have noticed I didn't use the mythic T1-T4
nore "Return to the temple of elemental evil" and 90's Greyhawk
modules, I have Falcon's revenge for example, I am just not fan of
the current evolution of the World of Greyhawk...Also the scarlet
brothehood has a little impact on my campaign. I just didn't like the
racial focused ideology of this organization that didn't fit really
good in my campaign mood, may be I will include some of their
assassins and may be an amabassador at the Slavers Den.. Thus, I
created some alternative order of monks, one for Nerull, one for
Istus among others...I also used the Fate of Istus module, especially
the included maps of the wild coast cities, but I won't use the main
plot..
---
As you see, I use third edition rules but try to keep a first
edition feeling to my campaign, I must add I keep a serious control
on magic items, mainly because I want my players to rely on their own
skills (and neurons), and acquire experience in raw dungeoneering
with the help of magic trinkets.DCC modules are perfect for this.
---
I Hope you enjoyed this details, may be you can use some of the ideas
I included in my campaign, feel free to do so, if you have any
further questions, I will answer with pleasure, if you have some
suggestions, they are more than welcome, best regards,

Mike.
