I just picked up the core RPG book this weekend and it's pretty
cool. I haven't had a chance to playtest yet, but I think the game
mechanics may be a bit too simplified for my tastes, but it really
does a great job of incorporating the feel of films like Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero and the Emperor and the Assassin.
As for setting material, it's basically Warring States China, roughly
20 years before the Qin conquer the other states, with a healthy dose
of the supernatural thrown in (demons, ghosts, possession).
Characters can be pretty much anything you can come up with like
travelling swordsman, ex-soldiers, mystics (4 kinds in the basic
rules...Diviners, Exorcists, Internal Taoist Alchemists and External
Taoist Alchemists, which can be mixed and matched), spies, bandits,
merchants, monks, barbarians, legalist scholars, courtiers,
travelling physicians...
The core book does a great job conveying the flavour of the setting,
which includes examinations of religion, philosophy, customs, etc. as
well as the overall theme of Legalism vs. Tradition, which is a
recurring conflict in the setting. On top of that, the book is damn
pretty too.
One of the only downsides is the extremely sparse amount of material
on each of the states (each only gets about 4-5 pages of material),
but if you're the type who likes to flesh out their campaign setting,
there is certainly enough material here for you to fill out a corner
of the world for your own campaign.
Overall, I'd highly recommend the book to anyone who's interested in
running a fantasy medieval China RPG campaign.
