I'd like to retract a piece of information I released earlier regarding the
available tours at the National WWII Museum during Heat of Battle.
I was mistaken that the Museum was giving away free Behind the Lines tours to
convention attendees. Apparently the tours still cost their normal amount, what
is unusual is that Museum staff are not normally available over the weekend,
particularly on Sundays, to conduct these tours. They will be available,
however, for these tours that particular weekend (Aug. 21-23).
Sorry for any confusion.
Thanks

Subject: Heat of Battle and its Avalon Hill Classics Tournament
Do the acronyms ZOC, TEC, and CRT mean anything to you? Does the act of
calculating combat odds bring back memories of your wargaming youth?
From humble beginnings in a Maryland garage in 1954, The Avalon Hill Game
Company grew up to become the premier pioneer in commercial board wargame
development. For over 40 years Avalon Hill developed over 150 strategy games,
many of them to this day considered board wargaming "Classics".
The National WWII Museum and Heat of Battle III are proud to encourage and
promote the continued play of some of these "Classics", many of which are
actually in the Museum's collection. Thus is born a weekend-long Avalon Hill
Classics Tournament at Heat of Battle III, the National WWII Museum's annual
wargaming convention, to be held in New Orleans, August 21-23, 2009. After all,
what better way is there, to understand and celebrate the history of wargaming,
than to play some of board wargaming's "relics" in our very own National WWII
Museum?
While there are many "Classics" in the Avalon Hill gaming stable, and many
opinions on what makes a game "Classic", we've chosen ten of the oldest and most
enjoyable WWII-themed Avalon Hill products for this Tournament:
* Africa Korps
* Anzio
* Battle of the Bulge
* Bismarck
* D-Day
* Midway
* Panzerblitz
* Panzer Leader
* Russian Campaign
* Stalingrad
We don't expect players to have owned them all, nor have necessarily even played
them all, but many of them are built around the same basic principles of ZOC,
TEC, and CRT, and share similar rules. We felt, therefore, that these particular
games provided the right combination of variedness but also sufficient
similarity that, chances are, you have played several of them before and will
find great enjoyment in playing them again.
Complete rules for this Classics Tournament, (which features a flexible open
format on Friday and Saturday where you can arrange your own games with fellow
Tournament participants to accommodate YOUR weekend gaming schedule) can be
found here: http://www.nationalww2museum.org/calendar/avalon-hill-pdf.pdf. If
you have any further questions concerning this Tournament then please email me
directly (abouffard@...). If you are planning to attend Heat of Battle and
participate in this Tournament then please bring with you copies of the
aforementioned games that you wish/plan to play.
So, why not come join us at the National WWII Museum and spend a weekend in New
Orleans, where your weekend convention pass includes the $16/day Museum exhibit
pass for the entire weekend and a chance to participate for free in the Behind
the Lines tour of the Museum's greater collection and storage facilities? A
special convention hotel rate at the nearby Courtyard Marriot of $69/night
should make accommodation easy, with open gaming continuing there after normal
convention hours on Friday and Saturday night.
If Avalon Hill games aren't your thing then Heat of Battle has many other gaming
events planned: Flames of War Mid-War Tournament, Command Decision, Memoir '44,
GMT's Battle for Normandy, General Quarters, The Wargame to name just a few
(please see: http://www.nationalww2museum.org/calendar/hob3-prelim-schedule2.pdf
for an up-to-date list of events).
To register online please visit:
http://nw2m.convio.net/site/Calendar/348008071?view=Detail&id=101961
I certainly hope to see you there!!
...and remember...old wargames, and wargamers, never die...they just end up in
the National WWII Museum!

Guys, Hello I just joined as I was just introduced to Crimson skies. I
like the story line and the games. Are there any campaigns that have
been made for the pc game? I have played many old games that have had
a number of campaigns made for them.
Thanks,
Tony
Actually there is still an active forum where members gather to discuss
Crimson Skies games ranginging from the FASA boardgame, wizkids game, PC
and Xbox versions.
You can find them at

Acrylics work fine; either art or craft paints, or ones formulated for use
on metal miniatures such as those produced by Citadel and Wargames Foundry.
Once painted though, I'd recommend a couple of coats of a decent colvent
based varnish to protect your work (not a water based one). I use Humbrol
Matt-Cote, but I realise that's almost certainly limited to the UK.
Hope that helps. Best,
Mike

Hello! I'd like to paint some patterns/schemes on my plastic clix
Crimson Skies planes.
Does anyone know what type of paints will work best on the clix planes?
Thanks!

I've never tried but... I wonder if a VASSAL module will be usefull to
play... latest versions of VASSAL has a LOT of cool options... A well
worked module could make playing a damn easy thing... right click to
plot movements, automatic placement of plane when solving maneuver,
automatic damage filling (just right click on the impact square and say
what weapong hit to check the adecuate boxes...). It could be a hard
work but could result in a lovely module.
I've almost complete (another frozen project) the dungeon twister
module, and if I could go through the damn turning of the boards (with
automatic positioning of the counters over it) I could do anything XD

In our club 'Les Gardiens du rêve", at Sarreguemines (Lorraine, France) we play
several times each year, and we like it very much.
We have all the planes and I have also made a zeppelin.
I have post the pictures in the french CS yahoo group

I'm lucky to live in an area with two other people who love the game
enough to have collected everything published for it, and I suspect
between the three of us we have at least one of every plane produced
for the game in both metal and Wizkids plastic.
One guy runs a regular game at our local con, and we play a couple
other times a year, usually with a fairly large group of people.

Just to add on to a previous post discussion about this forum being
dead. I don't know how much the game is being played everywhere else,
but our group in Tulsa, OK plays the old boardgame every few months.
We have about 7-8 regulars with their own planes. Our game master has
a big zepplin that we play with. Very Cool. I'll post a pic of it on
this forum.

My main problem is I no longer have the rules, lost it in a move years
ago. I have subsisted myself over the years by playing the PC game
(excellent) the Xbox game (nice graphics but so-so gameplay) to
playing Whizkids Crimson skies (boring but at least I got some models
of the planes)
Crimson Skies has a great backstory and the kind of gaming I enjoy.
(Come on, who doesn't like to be sky pirates?)
Cheers
Thank you all!!! I thought this forum was a ZOMBIE TOWN!!! XD
In fact the counters are made using UCM2 to change the colors (a fancy
little program very usefull to print paper models specific to be used
with it, published by Ebbles Miniatures years ago), so if you get the
UCM2 and the original UCM files for the counters... you can even create
ANY scheme you want.

The counters are lovely. Thanks!
This forum is pretty dead but... I'm sure that many people out there
are still playing Fasa's Crimson Skies.
So, I've created counters for all the basic game planes (and a bonus
balmoral for transport missions) with color schemes for up to 10
factions ready to print in PDF.
The counters include facing, plane's name and Base to Hit, and a back
side to show that it is smoking (or heavily damaged, player's choice).

Have a FASA boxed set and about 5 expantion books up for grabs. Im
going to Ebay them in a bit. thought I would offer them up here if
anyone is interested. You can email me at this address if you are.
Honestly I find that the movement rules is what make CS special and
for me, that usually like very completed wargames, that compensate for
the simplicity of the game like the 2D aspect of the game.
As for the damage system, I can understand why somebody could not like
that, it requires a lot of pencil work and they are ways to make
simpler damages systems that would do the job. However, FASA made a
good job with that system, especially if you compare it to the earlier
INTERCEPTOR damage system that was user unfriendly and a headache to use.
I do not feel the way you do about the CS system but I can understand
that you want to try something else. However the double blind
movement system is sooo great, it's a lot more exciting then a poker
game and make the game unique so I would encourage you to stick with
it and maybe you'll fall in love with it.
Malphas
I didn't mean to offend you. If you are happy with CS as it is, then
by all means continue to play it that way. I've played Blue Max and
like it as an intro level air combat game. I love Over the Reich and
the Speed of Heat rules set it comes from. Heck, I even like TSR's
Air War. But these all fall more to the simulation end of the sim/
game spectrum. I've played Renegade Legion but the template system
is just to much. When a shot comes in from a 60 degree angle and
strikes the aircraft it suddenly makes a hard turn to line up with
the template. This drives me up the wall.
But understand, if you like it, enjoy it. I just can't play it and
have decided to change it to meet my needs and let me play with the
neat aircraft.

I had the same feeling, so I created a variant system based on the Air
War:C21 system. It was recently published in the SFSFW Journal, Ragnarok. If
anyone would like a copy please email me offlist.

Are you kidding? have you tryed to send a Curriculum Vitae to
Wizkidsgames? (maybe they will like your throw-a-good-ruleset-to-the-
recycle-bin way) XD
If you remove what makes CS special you get a complete different
game... for that maybe you may want to play CS with the Down in
Flames rules (for example and not a bad idea at all :p). CS gets the
best of two great games... first the movement system for blue-max
wich is in fact a great dogfight system, a newbie may think it is
pretty random but until you achieve the "six" of an enemy (and it is
pretty easy with a good pilot wingman tactic) you can't imagine what
movement will he/she do... it is in the right place between fun and
sim... if you dont think so try the full rules of "over the reich"
and you'll see your dog flying through the window after a BIG KICK IN
HIS ASS. And the damage system was taken from the renegade legion
series (much like Centurion than leviathan or interceptor) and is the
most spicy part of the game... you can see the true damage and it is
PURE FUN... with some games you'll be recording damage with no
template at all, wich is pretty fast!
I think you're trying to do something wrong...
TOPO.
I really like the setting for Crimson Skies. The time period is full of
possibilities. The
aircraft are beautiful and imaginative. The ability to create pilots and
aircraft is cool. But the
combat system (particularly the damage system) drives me up the wall. The
damage
templates caused me to kick my dog, a Saint, and I nearly broke my foot (she
didn;t even
notice the kick).
So, like Tim Allen, I decided to fix it. I added a new movement system and
a new combat
and damage system. Pre-plotting movement is gone, replaced by a simple impulse
system.
Armor is no longer ablative. The rounds either penetrate or they don't. Most
of the systems
remain intact but it flows better and plays much quicker.\ If anyone has any
ideas you'd
like to contribute or would like to see what I've done, let me know.

Unfortunatly the FASA game has been dead for a long time so finding a
CS playing group is like finding a dodo....
I'm still looking for a playing group in Hamburg (Germany), anybody
there ?
Hardly ACTIVE, but there is a lot of old websites on the webring:
http://k.webring.com/hub?ring=crimsonskies
I doubt there really IS much activity about the FASA game anymore.

There isn't really that much that is active; ff5 is a great site and I
highly reccommend; http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/the_black_zeroes
