Texas: A Growing Force in Scholastic Chess   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #1118 of 1131 |
All,

A must-read article in the April 2008 issue of Chess Life magazine -- "Texas: A Growing Force in Scholastic Chess", pages 32-35. The article examines various factors contributing to the success behind 4 of the most prominents Texas teams including Canyon Vista Middle School in Austin!!

The article includes a great interview with Coach Mike Feinstein!! And the first annotated game is that of Steven Chen (player from 1st Place 6th Grade Team at Nationals K-12/C: Canyon Vista in Austin) versus Andy Wang (of Florida). Nice win!

Thanks,

Binny

Congratulations to Austin's Canyon Vista Middle School 6th Grade Team (6th Grade National Championship Team) and to Derek Chang (6th Grade National Co-Champion) for their exceptional performances at the National K-12 Championship this past weekend in Houston.  In addition to Derek, Steven Chen, Andy Wang and Kevin Xie made up the winning Canyon Vista 6th grade team.

Congratulations are also deserved for George Qi (=2nd place in the 7th Grade section), Alexander Balkum (clear 2nd in the 9th Grade section) and to the Canyon Vista 7th and 8th Grade Teams (clear 2nd in their respective sections).

Considering how not too long ago, a top 3 finish in the state was a remarkable performance, these terrific results in a National Event really highlight how Austin has emerged as a chess location to reckon with.

There were many other strong individual performances that can be found at the USCF website.  I wanted to briefly highlight the headline results for those who were not able to attend the event in person.

Mike
