Considered the greatest player of all time, the King of chess is gone.
Fischer died yesterday 1-17-08 after a long illness, his spokesman
confirmed today. Fischer had only been in Iceland since March 2005,
when he fled Japan to avoid being returned to the USA to face possible
charges in connection with his rematch against Boris Spassky in 1992,
whom Fischer beat in 1972 for the world title, since the latter match
was held in a country that the USA had political issues with and he
was told not to play there by our government. He ignored this demand,
and later praised the 9/11 attackers for their successful strikes on
the US, and held widely known anti-semitic views which he espoused on
radio shows taped outside the United States.
Fischer, born March 9, 1943, was 64.
