I also wish to congratulate the players, the coaches,
the organizers, and the parents of these fine kids.

I wished I could have gone, but could not. Congrats
indeed to all of these fine young players, several of
whom are familiar to Austin chess coaches as students.
We are all proud of our kids! :) :) :)

Subject: Re: *ChessInAustin* Congratulations to
Austin's National Champions

Considering three years ago, most players in Canyon
Vista Middle School, still began to learn how to play
chess.
Comparing to all New York's teams with their coaches
such as GM Hikaru Nakamura and GM Joel Benjamin with
the sheriff, Sunil Weeramantry.
We had few Austin teams with much fewer players and
one coach, Michael Feinstein, standing...
I think that every player was very focus on their
goals with their best performance!
Besides players' own effort, many thanks and
appreciation should go to all the local chess coaches.
To name few, Mike Feinstein, Alex Chau, Eugene
Kohnitz, Paul Chaplin, Torey Neuzil, Yuri Mirgorodsky,
Jim Fleener, Jim Franklin, and David Parker.
One name I did not forget is Gary Gaiffee. Mr.
Gaiffee has been promoting the local scholastic event
for years in Austin. It has provided a great
environment for those young players to grow.
The newly formed Austin Chess Club in 2006 has
provided even stronger chess environment for those
young players to learn from veteran players.
I really appreciate the current chess environment in
Austin and looking forward to improve a much better
one!
Thanks,
Darda

Congratulations to Austin's Canyon Vista
Middle School 6th Grade Team (6th Grade National
Championship Team) and to Derek Chang (6th Grade
National Co-Champion) for their exceptional
performances at the National K-12 Championship this
past weekend in Houston. In addition to Derek, Steven
Chen, Andy Wang and Kevin Xie made up the winning
Canyon Vista 6th grade team.
Congratulations are also deserved for George Qi (=2nd
place in the 7th Grade section), Alexander Balkum
(clear 2nd in the 9th Grade section) and to the Canyon
Vista 7th and 8th Grade Teams (clear 2nd in their
respective sections).
Considering how not too long ago, a top 3 finish in
the state was a remarkable performance, these terrific
results in a National Event really highlight how
Austin has emerged as a chess location to reckon with.
There were many other strong individual performances
that can be found at the USCF website. I wanted to
briefly highlight the headline results for those who
were not able to attend the event in person.
