I think what Packrats getting at is you don't HAVe to be deceitful, you don't HAVE to stab to win...a game of Diplomacy. I think everyones 'hip' to this...
It is nowhere near as painful as you make it sound. The alliance part is actually quite easy. The tricky part is getting the non-allies to cooperate....
