Hi all,

At the recent BOF committee meeting Geoff failed, in the few seconds
I gave him, to find a compelling excuse to reject my nomination of
him as my successor as BOF chairman. I'm sure he will do a terrific
job! - everybody please convey your congrats/sympathies etc.

I have started a thread on the WOF forum that I would like to invite you all to.
It is a thread where you can share your thoughts on how we can improve the WOC and/or what you thought made the WOC in Athens so good.
The thread is intended for both players and spectators.

Please help to give feedback to Benkt and Manu.

Call for contributions for the Jan 08 Newsletter

Of the British Othello Federation. Deadline for receipt December 24,
2007, 5 PM; earlier communication of articles is strongly encouraged. As
usual, of course, if you have a meaty article *nearly* finished which will
be much better with a couple more days of work, email me as soon as you
know that the deadline may be missed and negotiate an extension.

The preferred format for submission is as a simple email message; fiddly
bits (eg, Ste'phane) can be handled ad lib, either typed as here, in-line
symbol, or with a note following (Stephane [acute over first e]) -- if you
leave symbols that don't translate to ASCII in their original format, so
they become some random symbol in ASCII, I may not be able to guess what
you meant. Although sending me articles as attachment files avoids ASCII
problems, such files give me quite a lot more work moving them into the
Newsletter format than simple email does. By all means write your
original in whatever word-processing platform you prefer, but then copy it
into an email message to send to me. Or, of course, just snail-mail me a
printed version; I can type.

Transcripts can be just

63 50 43 23 34 24 25 18
etc

and diagrams can be just

- - - - W B W -
etc

If your article includes a lot of diagrams and you don't want to take the
trouble to type all of them in, POST me a copy of all those diagrams
(labelled as to where they go in the text that you have emailed to me).

Looking forward to all those contributions (please)!

And while you are at it George - drop Geoff from any future Aussie WOC
team - don't think it is quite right having a senior official of
another national federation playing for Australia. He is the BOF
chairman and therefore should put the interests of the British game
first. I think you should also find someone in Australia to be your
victim whilst you remain an official European-based contact amongst
the superior Othello facilities that are found in Europe.

Roy Arnold's opinion is his own, not the official stance of the BOF.

Seems to me that Geoff is more than adequately qualified to play for Australia at the WOC because he is Australian. And it does free up an extra place on the UK team for someone else when Geoff does qualify for the UK. You seem to shoot yourself in the foot because that place might someday help you to go to the Worlds (again) and may have benefited you in the past (I don't know if it did). And seeing as Geoff is the new chairman it probably doesn't help working relations much with you as BOF web guy.

Constant arguments make this seem more like work than a leisure activity (which is more important than work in my opinion, seeing as you pay to play Othello but only work if you get paid).

Jeremy

PS Couldn't make Xmas as I moved house on the Wednesday before and had too much that needed doing. Not that I was in any fit state to play anyone having only played Othello3 in the last couple of weeks in an attempt to beat it on expert level (which I eventually did).

Ordinarily yes - but as he now holds the most senior position in the
BOF then IMO he should really put the interests of the British game
ahead of that in Australia. It would therefore seem not quite right
that he should continue to represent Australia and doesn't make it
look very good for the BOF if he does. As there could be a problem
getting other players to represent Australia then I have other ideas
which I hope will be successful.

Assuming there is room for both him holding his role as BOF chairman
and a place on the Aussie team (personally I would really prefer him
to be on the British team if he qualifies for it even if I would
benefit for his withdrawal). However I would like to somehow create a
bit of healthy competition for places on the Aussie team or potential
team-mates for Geoff (whichever way he looks at it).

I - could - understand Roy's point.
As the new chairman (congrats! by the way), Geoff's objective should
be to promote Othello in Britain and a win in a WOC would help.
Now, what should he do if he's playing for Australia and has to play
a member of the British team?
A win would be desired by the Australians but would reduce the
chances of a WOC win by British player... Geoff the Australian would
be happy, but Geoff the chairman wouldn't...

Of course, the ideal situation would be for the BOF Chairman to win the
tournament and for the British team to win the team championship.
Therefore, the British team can be happy to lose to me, and the BOF can
be happy that the Chairman is World Champion.

The apparent conflict of having someone who holds an Australian passport
as the BOF Chairman was perfectly obvious before I got the job, and in
fact was my main argument for not giving it to me in the first place.
But I do not believe anyone other than Roy is concerned about the issue.

It is in fact my ultimate goal to be unable to qualify for the World
Championships, due to both Britain and Australia being able to field
full teams of players who have qualified ahead of me.

Hi all,

All years I have known Geoff I have learned me that he is a fair player and person and I am sure that he will be a positive injection in BOF as he is in WOF. You couldnt choosed a better guy in my opinion.
Hope that you all can see the positive to have a enthusiastic Geoff ac Chairman and not only see to things who not in fact are importent.

I suppose I was more concerned that representing Australia in future
WOC might become a distraction rather than Geoff holding an Aussie
passport - Geoff's predecessor had a huge distraction outside the game
which affected his performance as chairman. I think Geoff might have
quite a difficult task on his hands trying to restore the profile of
British Othello - especially on the international stage which has seen
a decline (next year I think we will have just the one would be seeded
player in the WOC - two years ago I think it was four).

To try and achieve the latter, I would probably suggest holding an
Aussie B-championships in Europe to provide players for an Aussie team
in future WOC and Geoff and George selling the package to Aussie
ex-pats in the UK and Italy respectively.

Hi Benkt

I suspect that the only two people who have the slightest concern about Geoff being Chairman are Roy and, of course, Geoff himself.

***

Incidentally, it is probably worth noting one of the differences between football and Othello.

In football the convention is that the team's failures are attributed to the manager and the team's successes are attributed to the players. People struggle for the job of manager and live in constant fear of losing it.

In Othello, however, many of us cling to the quaint notion that the players are largely responsible for their own successes and failures, and that the chairman has little if anything to do with it. People live in constant fear of being offered the job of chairman and struggle to find a replacement.

2007/12/4, Geoff Hubbard <ghubbard@ntlworld.com>:

Geoff.

So far two regionals have been confirmed with one provisional and
another backup plan.

Mar 08: Leicester-Oadby Regional 1
May 03: Cambridge MSO (provisional)
Apr 19: Leicester-Oadby Backup Plan B regional.
Jun 21: Farnborough (Hants)

Need people to organise two more events - in two (or three if
Cambridge falls through) of the following locations, one of which on
April 19th:

London - can Graham or someone in London get the Bath House pub, the
venue for the 2007 event? Has tended to be a well attended event I
would like to get a tournament there.
Coventry - can Michael Handel get somewhere?
Sheffield - can Robert Stanton get the place where the 2006 event was
held? If not then I can look at places both 2km west of the city
centre and in Leeds.
Norwich (back-up for Cambridge and would have to be May 3rd or 10th) -
I Cambridge falls through could Crichton Ramsay or Joel Blackmur come
up with somewhere?
Nottingham - Joel Feinstein?

Steve Rowe has suggested running two regionals - would definitely
prefer this not to happen.

Thanks for all your work organising this Roy!

I will guarantee a regional in Cambridge will happen with or without the
MSO.

We definitely need a London regional.

I'm sure Ben and his infinite resourcefulness could find a place in
Derby if needs be.
What about Ashford? (Jeremy Dyer)

The hall that we had the Sheffield regional in wasn't too far away.
If we were to get ourselves organised we could meet at the station and
share a taxi.

Isn't the whole point of regionals to have them in different regions so
that there's always one you don't have to travel too far for?

I would think having repeating venues is better than having fewer than 5
regionals.

Just some thoughts.

Geoff.
(I'll not be able to make any tournaments in late/Feb early/March.)

And ideally central London. I have a number of contacts but if I use
them the venue is likely to be around SE7 (Greenwich/Lewisham area).

> What about Ashford? (Jeremy Dyer)
For most players this would involve a journey across London - Ashford
being at least one hour from central London. All events there have
been poorly attended. I have tended to drop Ashford in favour of
Farnborough - my boss got the venue for free and there are five known
players in that area (six if you can technically include me) while
Ashford has just Jeremy Dyer.

> The hall that we had the Sheffield regional in wasn't too far away.

Buses are most likely cheaper than taxis - I was forced to get a cab
from the city centre to where I live (the same length of journey) and
it set me about £5.50. A Sheffield plusbus ticket add on to the train
ticket costing around £2.20 (railcard discounts are available) is the
cheapest way of doing it.

There are a number of options in my part of the city - slightly
further away from the station (about 2km) but is served by at least
two high frequency bus routes. I myself slightly prefer Leeds or
Wakefield (generally a faster train journey from London) as a venue
for a Regional in Yorkshire if somewhere can be got cheaply in either
city centre.

> Isn't the whole point of regionals to have them in different regions so

The BOF should somehow use the Regionals to bring new players into the
game. A Coventry Regional (where Michael Handel lives) could target
would-be players in Birmingham (I have known a few there in my playing
career).

> I would think having repeating venues is better than having fewer

Agree but I would still prefer to avoid repeating venues.

Morning and Afternoon all,

Firstly: Appologies - my interesting article could have filled one of
two spaces if not both. Very very lazy David.

Secondly: If i'm required as per the last board meeting, to look into
the BOF's liability insurance, could i get a copy of the policy
wordings and schedule from whoever has it please?!!!

Thridly: I never officially congratulated Geoff on his appointment as
chairman - though im sure he already knows i think he's the perfect
choice. Its his article that has prompted this response:

Geoff said - "You can post your ideas to the BOF mailing list
British_Othello@yahoogroups.com"

so i am...

i) The main concern for every othello community and the age old
riddle... how do we get more players to play?

If you havnt already read the US mailing list and the ventures of one
teacher, Andrea Guarducci - i strongly recommend it! its quite
inspiring how he is organising the US open(?) with the planned
attendance of the top US players + what i remember reading as
somewhere between 30-40 school kids + their teachers and parents!!

Surely the kick start the US federation needs to get itself back on
its feet!

So how can we develope on our achievements so far and get more
players attending - short of recruiting a few teachers?

A)Well - has anyone thought about offering their services to a local
primary school to organise such events (that is assuming your
unemployed or work part-time? - which ok, most are not!)

B)I find it strange that he have a rated Christmas 'Friendly'
tournament! surely this is the perfect oppertunity to encourage
people to come along to?

It must be disheartening to turn up to your first tournament and get
comprehensivly thrashed by every player there! no wonder you get
players not coming back next time round!! If the day was unrated -
the top players might be more inclined to battle it out against each
other, but take it easy and have a little more fun against the new
comers!

Id be more inclined to play some of my more ridiculous openings for
sure =) especially against Graham and Imre.

On top of that if you do encourage a 'proper' friendly tournament -
is it not the best tournament to have as roaming.. rather than fixed
in Cambridge?

C)Lets make the british tournaments a little more.... enthusiastic!
Wheres the British Grande Prix trophey? - ive already said to Geoff,
ill buy it! - just have to get him to agree on the design - and of
course it will be back dated ;)

best beginner prizes? even if there is only one new player there!
Geoff and i have about 8 or 9 of the travel boards dished out by the
WOC between us - which will be perfect.

D) id love to hear some ideas on attracting more internet players to
attend... since attending tournaments - ive been slapping
announcements for some of the bigger tournaments on Flyordie.com,
Kurnik.org, Yahoo Games and Facebook. there is an abundance of low to
mid level and some higher level players on these sites and some of
them very keen to learn...

but i am vexed by the answer that they all seemed to have got
together to give me... "im not goon enough" ... ahhhhhh

To which i reply - "no one expects you win your first tournament"
and "its the best way to improve your game"

and so far im dissapointed to say its only attracted 1 player to the
christmas friendly, Jon Woolfson. I hope he returns again soon!

Ok... i was under the impression that i had more ideas than that...
but im having to pause to think now. so ill leave you to feedback.

Some other points from the newsletter. I havnt read the game analysis
properly as of yet but will do. Though the game that graham breifly
mentioned in his article of mine from the WOC wasnt nice it was
frightening as Tomei played through my book until move 30 and then
made a goood variation that looked to me to be a horrible loss until -
while pacing around like i do to see whats going on around me. Toei
played H6 flipping only G6 and not flipping up to D2 (which i am
certain he had not seen and wasnt being dishonest). I of course
gratefully made him make the additional flips and sighed a huge sign
of release as i could now see the win.

Personally i preferred my game against Yoojoon Seo in the last round
(im black):

F5F6E6F4E3C5G5G3G4F3E2H6C4D6H5H4E7F2G6F7D3C6H2D1D2D8F8C1E8B4C3B3C8G7E1
H3H8H1G2D7C7G1F1B8H7G8A8B7A7A6B6A4A3A2B2A1B1C2A5B5

Im sure everyone that is unafmiliar with the position after black
17.e7 get very nervous because the 'correct' reply isnt too intuitive
and most go for what Seo played.

And it gives a great example of latching on to a potential and trying
to force it prematurely (in this case the stoner trap) and it going
wrong.

I enjoyed geoff's article about the average discs lost during the
nationals... Geoff how did you go about tabulating all the errors? if
there is a tool its surely or great benefit for improving someones
endgame?

I do like to think that my endgame is usually reasonably good and
that my opening is pretty strong... its my midgame that often throws
it away for me, the oppoent that strings to mind for is Ben.. ive
lost a couple of games this year to him after coming out of the
opening almost certain im ahead and just watching my assumed lead
evapourate during the midgame. I therefore am going to spend a little
time each week chosing a game and taking a looking at the midgame.

Ive already done this once and written an article about it on the
Othello wiki

http://othello.dk/book/index.php/Midgames_from_the_WOC2006

Its unfortunatly an incomplete look round by round at some games from
Mito. which i was too lazy to finish.

but i think i will complete with a game per week that i will post
firstly here and then prehaps alter the wiki to be a random selection
of games, rather than from just mito... Ill post again later this
weekend with a game =)

Thanks to Ben for the flattery, "internet-wunderkid-called-David
(Beck)". i dont hide my vanity and do enjoy searching for my name in
the newsletters of recent, and i think you've made other similar
references on your blod to David Hand and myself.

I will pull you up however on your accuracy... I did infact beat
Graham for the first time at nationals =p

I think thats about me done... congratulations if you got to the end
of this... i had nothing better to do today =)

tata ~
