It depends on what your world looks like at the moment. I have tools
that will do all sorts of nasty things to an image map (not the original
AuR file) to get it into a form that maps nicely onto a sphere.

Hm. I've been attemping to use Gimp but I keep getting these failed
errors when I use the map-to-object plugin.. :|

I think it's because I don't have the GCK (general convenience kit)
addon, but all the links to the site which supposedly has it lead to
a dead end.

That's an interesting response, but I'm not sure what to make
of it...
I have successfully reprojected a number of people's worlds
using a little utility I wrote some time back called ReprojectImage
( http://www.ridgenet.net/~jslayton/ReprojectImage.zip ). However,
it's a Windows-only program and it's a bit of a pain to use.
I could do the work for you or suggest ways and tools that
might be of assistance, but I can't do much without an
understanding of what you currently have. Specifically, what
sort of projection are you using or is it the classic RPG "flat
map" where all distances are equal in all directions over the
surface of the map? Is it a large-scale (world or continental)
map or simply a local-area map?
This may be getting a hair off topic, but I have resisted
plugging any commercial products. ;-)

Hi all,

I just drew some rivers on top of an existing jpg map, which i
inserted earlier at a different computer.
Then i removed the background jpg in order to transfer it to a 3,5''
disk. Now at home i just want to insert the background jpg again, but
when i open the aur file with the drawn rivers and insert the jpg
afterwards or the other way around, my rivers are not at the exact
position of the rivers in^ the background jpg.
Is there an option to move one overlay relatively to another to
adjust the drawn rivers to the background jpg? ???

I couldn't manage it.
thanks in advance.

The only way to really move an overlay with respect to another is to select
all the items in an overlay and move them. You can do this by freezing all
the other overlays (click on the overlay's checkbox until it turns gray),
and using "Select All". Then drag with the mouse.

I've got a very large continental map that spans almost half the
globe.. It's pretty much the classic RPG flat map, all distances
equal in all directions over the map..

Used the projectionary software you linked to, but it doesn't exactly
turn the map into a globe.. and any icons on the map get skewed about
madly. Guess it'd have been wise for me to do the projection base
first and the features after. Bleh.

Is there software for viewing autorealm maps only?
Will I have to make one from the source?
If so what version of delphi?

I have used the software alot, but I must confess that I have never
looked into it as a deveolper. I know delphi 5.

If you're going to write just a viewer, could it be done from scratch
in a cross-platform language like java, python, perl, or tcl/tk? I'm
finding myself frustrated that I have to print out my maps or export as
a graphic file to take to games with me when all my other data is on my
Mac laptop but I can't make use of any AUR data on it.

I understand completely. Being a little frustrated that I can't do
anything with AUR stuff on my Macs, I've been debating about writing a
Delphi --> Apple Dev Tools converter and teaching myself C while trying
to port to the Mac. Then I decide that I may as well wait until all the
Windows hardcoded stuff has been removed by the Linux(Kylix) team
before I start. Yes, I've emailed Borland and they have no intention of
ever supporting the Mac in any fashion, including a project file
converter.

Of course, if there's anybody on the list who knows the Apple Dev Tools
(OS X) and Delphi project file structures and wants to help write
something up to convert the project files, that would get everyone that
much closer to a Mac port...

should be wary of? Some of my players use macs.

Hi all,

I am pretty new to the programm and now i inserted some trees and
mountains from the symbols list and when i looked at the file size,
it was about 13 Mb. When i am editing the map it takes awful long to
apply changes or adding object etc. Why does the file blow up so much?
Is it just because of the symbols? Is there a better way to insert
mountains, trees etc. ?
Thanks

If you stick to Java2 (Sun JDK 1.3.x - don't even think about using MS
Java and hope it'll work on a Mac or anything non-Windows for that
matter) everything *should* be okay. Some users will not have upgraded
to 1.4 yet, but OS X 10.1 and 10.2 ship with 1.3.1. OS 8.x/9.x have
1.3.1 available, but I think not 1.4.

Java GUI code is a little slow and unstable on Macs - SWING more so
than AWT. If you can separate out the GUI layer from the core
functionality layer, someone can code it to directly access Carbon
widgets (I think - not absolutely certain) which would greatly improve
both execution speed and stability. I've never written anything more
fancy than "Hello World" in Java so I don't know how much help I can be
beyond testing, but that I will happily do for you.

There isn't any difference between making the pushpin invisible (by
unchecking it) and removing it. Both accomplish the same thing. To move
it, just re-place it somewhere else.

Right now, every symbol that you insert inserts a copy of the symbol into
the map. That may get fixed at some point to display multiple versions on
the map with a single copy of the symbol, but not in the near term. So your
only option is to create (or use) symbols that are "lightweight".

Line styles & colors don't matter--a byte gets stored per object
regardless. Fractal lines are the same size too (although slower to
draw) as normal lines, and are probably the best "bang for the buck" for
small sized icons. The really boring "black&white" icons that I
provided with the first release are small too; they're defined in a ttf
font, so add very little to a map when used.

There isn't any way now to see how big each symbol is, but you can look
at the size of the .aus files in the library directory to get an idea of
the general size of the group.

l was a former Campaign Cartographer 5 user before l found AuR.
l'd the same problem than you with the slow drawing of maps, using
elaborated AuR symbols, and l didn't know how CC was so fast and AuR
wasn't.
So l disected almost every CC symbol to find the "secret" and l found
it:
Every CC symbol is made with a minimal number of points, line and
colors, but once drawn in number, they've a very good look.

To be convinced clic on file>creations>pangheia_sample.gif
It's a details of a big map l've drawn using modified CC symbols in
AUR.
Also, l've added some "exploded" trees and mountains for you to see
how they are made (named sample_symbols.gif)

Hope that helps.

i will try to create similar symbols like ozzyryder told me. As i am

Add / edit the feature on a map, then press Ctrl+D (or click on the
"Book +" icon, or there's a menu item for Define Symbol too, but I don't
have it in front of me...)

You'll get a dialog to name and organize your symbol into a group. You
can create a new group from the main library dialog.

Hello everyone ... I've just gotten AutoRealm with the hopes of
FINALLY being able to map my fantasy world. That said, I am a bit
daunted by the program. I tend toward impatience and like to learn
as I go but that may not work here. And I've not had a lot of time
yet to play so I might answer all my questions eventually but thought
I'd pop in for some advice.

What's the best way to learn this thing? Typically manuals don't
help me much ... is there any kind of tutorial available for this?

Thanks!

I saw an article
(http://www7b.software.ibm.com/dmdd/library/techarticle/0211swart/
0211swart2.html?t=gr,lnxw07=Win2Linux) referenced while I was reading
at OSNews.com (http://www.osnews.com).

I read the article a little and noticed that it seems mostly to
showcase the way Borland's products work nicely with DB2 (IBM's
database product) across platforms, but there might be something in
there that I missed which could be of use to the Linux porting team.

Greetings!

I just downloaded v1.20 a few days ago and I've been experimenting.
One thing I'm really interested in is making my own symbols.

The FAQ file says "bitmaps bad", so I was just wondering what format
is most acceptable. Also, what application is best for producing the
graphics?

I keep seeing references to v1.21. Is that version going to require a
full download, or will it be a patch file?

Well, that's enough to start with. See ya in the funny papers!

AutoREALM, of course! Although you can make bitmap symbols, they just
aren't editable (color or otherwise), and they take up a lot of memory.
For other symbols, just draw the symbol in AutoREALM, select it, and hit
Ctrl+D to define the symbol.

Almost all distributions have been an entire install. Occasionally, a
minor release (usually to correct a mistake) has been just the
executable. No patch distributions to date.

Okay, that makes sense. What graphics format does AutoREALM use?
I'm more familiar with another graphics program, and it saves
files in a wide variety of formats.

Well, I was just wondering anyway.

Take care, Y'All!

to import the CC2 symbols and modify them slightly to my own use,
l've used EPS fromet.
It works fine.
