When I select an item and try to change it's main color or its fill color, the
item's color remains the same. In addition, this happens when I try to add a new
object with the new color. The fill pattern, the background color and the grid
color work just fine.

I tried the xp operating system, and now the program works beautifly. For those
of you who are curious. I was using vista when the original problem showed up.
Thanks to all of you who tried to help me.

I don't think so. Windows BMP files have no transparency information.

It's a but unintuitive but use the colour settings. Select the BMP and set
the background colour to the colour you want to be transparent. I think
that's how you do it.

Yes, there have been some efforts to fix that. There are more icons to
download.

I've used MS Paint, IrfanView, and Icon Sushi to change the icons or PNGs to
bitmaps and in each case, the transparent parts end up black. Maybe I'm missing
a step. In AR itself, I see no place to deal with transparencies and the Edit
mode in general is indecipherable.

Now, for some positive feedback: Autorealm is SOOOOOO much easier to use than
CC3.

To scale icons to a larger map in CC3, it seems you have to know the hidden
commands since the documented ones completely fail to do what they say (STILL
haven't figured it out), you can't simply SELECT or DELETE items, and in general
the interface has all the charm and ease-of-use as a half-finished Chinese
FORTRAN compiler. The fact that they think to charge hundreds of dollars for it
is not just simply insane, but OFFENSIVE. They deserve whatever buccaneering
they get. Bastards.

But they have all the art. That's the rub.

I was wondering if anyone else has ever used the mapping program that came with
the original Core Tools CD back during the days of 2nd edition? Or, has anyone
been successful using video games to map? I haven't tried it, but I've been
thinking of just doing a campaign map in Age of Shadows 2 since the graphics are
excellent and I could just use screen captures.

That was my thought. In my (non-AR) experience, PNGs with alpha channel often
come in with transparent pixels being black if the application doesn't
understand PNG transparency.

It's been a while since I used AR, but isn't the transparent colour set to
the selected background colour? BMPs and JPEGs don't have any transparency
info in the files as far as I know.

Does AR handle EMF? I thought it only did WMF. Try converting to WMF first
or simply paste it.

A follow-up: I'm having a devil of a time importing bitmaps, jpegs, and emfs.
The bitmaps and jpegs lose all transparency, converting transparent sections as
black. The EMF files import as...nothing. A blank space appears on the map and
when I go right to Drawing>Symbols>Define Selection as a New Symbol, it tells me
nothing is selected. Surely someone else has seen (and overcome) these issues?

If I have a group of icons I want to include in a map, but they exist as an icon
library is there any way to import the whole library (ICL file) at once as an
AUS file or a way to convert it to AUS.

Sorry, but when I batch convert icons to bmp or jpg format, the transparent
backgrounds change to black, which completely fouls the process. I don't want
to have to edit and then individually import each of my several dozen icons into
AR seperately. That's mind-numbingly tedious.

What about somehow making an ICL into a TTF file? Would that help since there's
apparently a similarity between font files and AUS files?

For all the development that's posted here, it seems that there's a needless
shrouding-in-mystery about how to create AUS files quickly. There shouldn't be.

The plugin architecture... It's pretty much been my dream for AutoRealm for
a long time now.

I started it with C++ and wxWidgets, but fell significantly short. The
problem was the amount of overhead required just to make a simple extension.
I, the guy who pretty much made the architecture and knew it best, needed
around 12 to 16 hours just to complete simple stuff. A new developer would
give up long before then.

With Python, I found a new method, but never quite found myself happy with
it. It still was too fragile, too error prone. You can see what I did, and
how well I did it, by looking at the ar3 module in the repository (though
you will need to go back a few revisions, as I'm currently dismantling that
module).

Recently, I've finally had reason to get to know the setuptools package (
http://pypi.python.org/pypi/setuptools ), and I've learned that my major
issues have already been dealt with and resolved. setuptools includes tools
especially meant to allow a dynamic, extensible framework. As such, all I
have to do is complete the core, which will be in ar3.core.

That module will then have the intelligence to find the extensions that are
installed, load them up, present the gui, etc. Add in the Paster toolkit (
http://pythonpaste.org/ ), and I can even help a new developer out by
providing a basic skeleton for a new module. This will result in dramatic
improvements in the ability of any given module to be written, tested,
documented, etc.

For instance, since everything will be its own package, we'll have a
polyline package (likely at ar3.object.polyline, though don't hold me to
that) that will include code to handle loading from xml attributes,
displaying on a wx.Canvas, editing, etc.

This also means that adding in a data type for a river will actually become
very easy, since only that package has to be written. Once that's done, it
can be trivially added to the distribution. It can also be distributed
separately, allowing individuals to test the extension more thoroughly
before it gets added to the main distribution.

Finally, the actual work flow of a new developer would wind up looking like
this: use paster to create a new module (this provides a template that can
be filled in as needed). Fill in the template, adding whatever resources are
necessary. Distribute the result.

And I would expect the result to be something that can be written, at a
basic level, over the course of four to six hours, even with minimal
familiarity with AR3.

So, to summarize, it's the dream I've had for AR3 for a long time. I finally
see the tools to make it happen.

Thank you, Michael, keep up the good work! :)It remembers me another Michael

Could you be please a little more explicit on what you are working on? What
is this "arch plugin" I see in the repository, its role?

I just saw in your bitbucket profile your website has been down due to spam

using filters, sending claims to (yahoo) moderators etc. Now I ignore them.

Hey all,

I'm a new member and it looks like AutoREALM is something I've
been looking for for a long time. However, as much as I enjoy
creating worlds, I'm not much of a graphics person or really
graphics oriented. Is there anyone on the list who would enjoy
making maps to my specifications or possibly take some existing
maps to pretty them up?

I'm sure I'll have more comments as time goes on.

Unfortunately, no. I've been pulled in too many different directions, and as
it turns out, at least a few of them are going to benefit the next version.
With these ideas, I think I can make development on the next version
significantly easier, down to the point of just having to fill out a
template, basically.

I'll be starting work on this tonight, along with giving out some other info
on changes to svn and the like.

Okay, opened a ticket with sourceforge, and found out it was because of the

Hey

https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/autorealm/wiki/
asks for authentification.

It seems guest users are ot permited to browse the wiki. We should change
that.
I tried to find the Trac admin panel but failed. :-(

If you have any solution or permission ...

Okay, the wiki has been copied over, at least as much as I can copy over.

I'm working on changing a little bit about how the various URLs for the site
are organized, but that's neither here nor there. Things are pretty well
back to the way they should be. And wiki.autorealm.org now works.

Further updates: Have been working with sourceforge, and gotten things set
up such that autorealm.org is hosted there directly. Furthermore,
wiki.autorealm.org redirects to a hosted instance of Trac on the sourceforge
sites, so going to http://wiki.autorealm.org/ actually works now. No data is
there, but I'll be working on the cross load tonight and the rest of the
week, so that the wiki will be working and fully populated again by the
weekend (I hope).

Sorry for these delays folks. I am trying, this was just a bad bad weekend
for me.
