My name is David. I've been a gamer since the Fall of 1976 (I remember
anxiously waiting to receive the Eldritch Wizardry supplement via mail
order because there were no FLNGS). I've used Campaign Cartographer
since the days when it was written in assembly code and only ran in
DOS. I have seen a lot change about my beloved hobby in 30-plus years.

I "discovered" AutoREALM about a year ago and have tinkered with it
off and on. I'm a big fan of Linux, the GNU, and open source. I really
enjoy the program. I like CC2 a lot, mainly because I've gotten around
the learning curve. My main complaint with CC2 is that the maps tend
to look a little generic. I've worked on some ways around that, but it
takes a LOT of work. From what I've seen of AutoREALM it seems easier
for the cartographer to put his particular stamp on a map and develop
a unique style.

I have a couple of questions, though.

#1 - AR's use of overlays seems to fulfill the role of layers in CC2,
but in a completely different way that has me baffled. Can someone
give me a sort of overview on overlays?

#2 - I've found the symbol libraries in the Vault, but is there
anywhere else good to check out? Same goes for sample maps.

Thanks, and I look forward to being part of the community.

David

Hi David, Thanks for the introduction and welcome! Question #1: AutoREALM treats overlays different than most programs. Instead of being physical layers (like...

AutoREALM overlays sound like layers in a CAD program, would that be a good analogy? twh ... From: AutoREALM@yahoogroups.com [mailto:AutoREALM@yahoogroups.com]...

I think CAD layers contain objects, rather than it being like set membership like AutoREALM. That is, in CAD, the layer to object relationship is one to many,...

Sounds like CAD layers to me, just modified for the many-to-many relationship-which makes sense for the application. twh ... From: AutoREALM@yahoogroups.com...

Perhaps a better term might be "aspects", since (like a house) it presents many different faces, but they are all part of the same structure. Mike Bourke ... ...
