Romantic? Romans believed that a warband charge was to be met with deep
formations, but once contact was made the Romans had the advantage due to
armor and better swords.
When I did the Allia scenario for Phil's Classical Hack Roman book, I
re-read and translated Livy's account which seems to indicate that Celtic
chariots turned the flank of the phalanx. I believe they never made contact, but
the thought of being flanked simply broke them.
If you play the Allia, the Romans and Latins win 4 out of 5 times.
Of another question is the defeat of the Makedonians by the Kelts during
the Brennoian invasion.
