MILWAUKEE (AP) - The man who co-created the game Dungeons & Dragons and helped
start the role-playing phenomenon is dead.

Gary Gygax (GEYE'-gaks) died this morning at his home in Lake Geneva,
Wisconsin, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee.

His wife, Gail Gygax, says he had been suffering from health problems for
several years, including an abdominal aneurysm.

Gygax and co-creator Dave Arneson developed the role-playing game in 1974 and
it went on to become 1 of the best-selling games ever. Dungeons & Dragons is
considered the grandfather of fantasy role-playing games and has influenced
video games, books, movies and inspired legions of adoring fans.

Gygax' wife says he always enjoyed hearing from the game's devoted fans about
how the game influenced their lives.
-------------------------
I literally cried, I kid you not. This is indeed a dark day for our hobby...
and even though I regret not being able to meet him, my loss and the hobby's
pale in comparison to his family's.

This Saturday, I'll run AD&D. In his memory, I've written a poem, titled His
Dice Still Roll. Please forgive my lack of poetic training and talent.

]His Dice Still Roll

The Dungeon Master himself has left us,
one of the fathers of our game, he was.
Gone he is, to that Great Gaming Table in the Sky,
failed his saving throw, I'm trying not to cry.

I am not a great poet, but gone is Gary,
I could not stay without, a word saying nary.
You gave us endless adventure and wonder,
heroism, fun, and why not, a little bit of plunder.

Dungeons, dragons, dwarves and elves,
you and Dave made it, so we could enjoy ourselves.
Sometimes we crit, sometimes we blunder;
but at our table, your name will always thunder.

The eepees, the magic, the loot, the treasure,
it all pales when compared to the pleasure
of gaming with your buddies. My eyes are wet
we gaming geeks will always be in your debt.

Now, for the DM himself, E. Gary Gigax,
let's go kill some orcs with a big-ass AXE!
