918th Bomb Group (H)
Archbury, England
"GIVE UM HELL!"
27 May 1943
Doc Campbell,
The 918th only flew B-17s with red tail and the white triangle A.
The tail ID used in the movie "Twelve O'clock High" (12 OCH) is that
of the actual 91st Bomb Group (H).
Unfortunately Twentieth Century Fox choose to use the ID markings of
the 91st rather than the 306th Bomb Group (H). 306 x 3 = 918.
If I may get back up on my pulpit and do some preaching about the
novel and the movie "Twelve O'clock High".
I believe that the novel and movie 12 OCH are based on the actual
306th bomb Group (H) in Thurleigh, England. The tail ID of the 306th
is a white triangle H.
Please refer to the 918archbury files section and the article
entitled "The Story Behind the Story of Twelve O'clock High".
The evidence is compelling.
However, 918archbury.com will use the white triangle A in order to
keep the same format as the movie.
However, Doc! Back to your problem.
The model is in error. No B-25s in the novel, movie or TV series
that I remember.
Perhaps the error could be the with the manufacture.
On my desk I'm looking at as I write you boys is a small metal model
of "Meat Hound", a B-17G that was with the 91st BGH.
Have her mounted on a white cloud bank of cotton.
White cotton contrails stream from her four powerful mills as her
altimeter reads 23,000 and she heads dead ahead for Schweinfurt.
Happy landings!
OK you throttle jockeys! Slow her down to 147 mph (B17s), flaps 1/3
down, ease her down nice and gentle on all three gams, and keep your
sticking feet off of those damn brakes.
Watch your six!
Remember, "GIVE UM HELL!"

Gentlemen! I've flown many a mission with Major Weber.
When Major Mike is flying. I can fall asleep like a baby.
He's one damn good pilot and remember you can get him a bottle of Vat 69 for his birthday. The same bottle that General Savage drank out of would be OK too.

In response to questions about acquiring and proper usage of reproduction paperwork of WWII reenactments, may I direct your attention to two worthy web sites. 1) ww2reenactors.proboards.35.com
On this site (which reqiures membership), they have a section devoted to all questions relating to USAAF operations in WW2. You may also find a link to Reproduction GI Paperwork. This site provides both free and minimal cost paperwork for the reenactor. Including an example of the 'tri-fold' AGO War Department Card.
This can be found on both the right side of the main page or at the bottom of listings to include Vendors and Vendors Comments sections.
2) www.hardscrabblefarm.com
On this site (linked to ww2 reeanctors), you will
find a wealth of WWII related info, including photos and proper gear and equipment questions and answers.
Also of great value, is an explanation of serial numbers (Dog Tags), and how to get the correct ASN for your impression.
Gentlemen and Ladies I can't recommend these sites enough for the invaluable and accurate information and tools we need to correctly assume our impressions.

Maj. Campbell,
The best bet would be to purchase either a Monogram (1/48 scale) or
Academy (1/72 scale) B-17G, then get some after-market decals. Since
the tail codes used by the 918th were "Triangle A", that of the 91st,
you could start with those. BG Savage's aircraft, "Picadilly Lily"
was a common name, and by doing a search on www.squadron.com, a model
shop website for "B-17 Decals" under the category "decals and
transfers", I'm pretty sure you could come up with a good solution.
Personally, I'm working on a 1/48 scale B-17F. This model will
have a scratchbuilt complete interior, a full ordnance load, better
engines, full crew.....well, you get the picture. I just got a decal
set that has the markings of 14 different B-17Fs, and that's what
will determine which production block I modify the model to
represent. It's going to be a BIG project, and it'll take some time,
but photos will be forthcoming.
I hope we get to see yours when you get it done!
