When a player leaves a game, how should you treat their positions?
I guess the best thing is to find a replacement player, but that could
be difficult.

What if the player is president of a company?
What if the player is the sole shareholder of a company?
If he has 2+ shares of a company, and the president sells down so that
he becomes the majority holder, what happens?

Yes,

the pre-GenCon 18xx convention. I was wondering since we were getting reports
from WBC that someone there would post info as well.

Some years ago I was running a tournament. One of the players had brought
his wife along, she to go shopping while he played 18xx. Midway through a
game of 1856 the news came through that she'd had some sort of turn in the
street and had been carted off to hospital. Ever the gentleman, he rushed
off to offer succour.

Without consulting the TD, the rest of the players ran his position by
consensus until the game ended. He finished with the best result for any
game of 1856 during the whole weekend, and won a small prize for it.

I suppose if a player absents himself for less acceptable reasons, you could
always apply postal NMR! rules--his companies do nothing save pay dividends
if possible, and buy trains only when forced. In stock rounds they buy
nothing. Forced stock sales happen in price order if raising cash, reverse
price order (but not non-counting shares) if over limit. Either way, stock
in other players' companies gets sold first.

Bob,

I am flying to Chicago at 6am Tuesday and will attend the last day of MidSumCon.
A friend of mine reports:

-4-5 tables of going at a time (not sure if this is all 18XX or if he is
including crayon games and such

-1870 is the most played game

-1858(Spain), 1880 (China), 1817, NAC, EU, 61 & 65 (Sardinia) all have been
played

-Bruce

Since this does not maintain track, I would agree that #174 does not have a grey
upgrade.

That's not correct. The 1825 Phase Four kit (K3) allows #66 to promote to #168.

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for 18XX players in Paris or near Chelles (77, east surburb).
I've got 1870 and a home version of 18AL and 18GA.

Pickup games of 1865, 1880 and possibly others.

SEMIS:
1856 Spencer Hamblen beat Daniel Barnes by $170

1830 Fabio P. beat Andy Roosen by $4!!!!

1830- Ken Guthermuth and Bruce Beard won comfortably.

FINAL- Very unusual. NYC was not green until after D bought. 2 of the 4
players had 1 RR each (and finished 1st and 4th). One player bought 4 of the 5
3Ts (and finished 2nd).

1. Bruce Beard
2. Spencer Hamblen
3. Fabio P.
4. Ken G.

We had players from US, Canada, Italy, England, Austria, Finland and Japan!

The game auctionn at WBC had several 18xx titles including 1832, 1850, 18FL,
18MEX, 1829, Steam over Holland, 18C2C (looked like one produced by Mark and not
a print and play version) and.........a complete set with all the expansions of
1825. The later has found a new home in my collection.

There has been 18xx going on pretty constantly in the open gaming area. Games I
have seen played include 1861, 18ARD, 1865, and 1830. I have a game of 18FL
setup for Sunday with some of the newer players and hope to get an 1824 in this
week.

Hopefully with GENCON moving back to its traditional week next year more 18xx
players can attend the WBC.

I'm pretty sure when Bruce says "Puffing Billy" he means "Puffing Billy
games that aren't 18xx." Here's a list of Puffing Billy categories:

http://www.traingamers.com/PBT%20Categories%202011.pdf

18xx used to be split into two categories, but now it's all lumped together
in one.

Hello.

in Paris, I don't know anybody playing on a regular basis. But in Namur and
Liège (Belgium), not too far from Paris, there are two bunches of 18xx players.
It is possible to organise from time to time an 18xx session at both clubs (ILV
in Namur, Objectif Jeux in Liège).

Moreover, in October, there is Objectif Jeux yearly game-con, IRV, in Liège,
where 18xx players are likely to attend, especially if we contact them and
organise à 18xx event. Previous editions hosted players from the kentish mob
(Peter, Jon, Barry, Stephen), David Hecht, Ale Lala, Michael Brünker,...

Hope this helps.

The had 3 tables of 18xx AND TWO OF pb GOING MOST OF TODAY.

1817 was played 7 times
1865
18MI
1870
1830
1861
1846
1826
NAC
1880
ARD
18PA

all got played over the 4 days.

I played 4 games today.

18Michigan. It has some mild interest, but it has too much chrome (small
complicated rules that for the most part add little value) and lacks a
center of gravity.

It does have one truly excellent private company though.

Not only no railway content, barely any "canon" content. This joke is

When a company receives its second tranche of capital, does it receive 5 times
its par price or 5 times its current share price? The rules use the phrase
"second half" of its money, which suggests that the par price is used, but I
don't think they state this explicitly.

Hi, the company receives the second half of its operating capital. The amount is
based on the par price. It has not been explicitly stated. But the general rule
besides most if not all 18xx games is that the operating capital is based upon
IPO-/par price and doesnt change with the stock market movements.

Subject: Production issues - large numbers of station markers
huttm
Send Email Send Email

As I gear up for getting 18EA into production, I'd like some feedback on the
issue of how to deal with 20 companies.
First some basics:
Of the 20 teams only 16 will typically be used in a game, and thus far it seems
only 10-13 will actually be used in most games.
The name/position of the teams is important (I can't just have generic
companies).
Each team needs 11 tokens, one of which needs to be "double sized" as the home
base token:
1 home base, 1 for the par chart, 1 for the stockmarket, 1 for the revenue chart
+ 7 additional station markers.
The issue is that this is a LOT of wood. 11 * 20 = 220 tokens, and I've been
asked whether I can reduce this number.
The reason each company has a max of 8 station markers (including home) is to
cope with mergers. Typically a newly-started company will have 2-4 station
markers, and will acquire more through merging.
It is also easier from a game-playing POV to have it this way so it's easy to
identify which markers belong to which area.
However, I am considering one or more of the following:

* Generic station markers, of which there could be 8 sets of 11 and 8 of 7,
giving a total of 72. A huge saving, but these will actually need one additional
dobber or card linking the company with the dobber symbols. So we'll need an
extra 16 giving us a grand total of 88. If we wanted to cover all 20 companies
we could add another 4 loads of 7 tokens for 116 tokens total.
* Each company has its own stock of 3 station markers (6 tokens per co), but
there are 6 (could be up to 8) "system" companies which are used for mergers etc
with 11 each. Total markers = (20 * 6) + (6 * 11) = 188 markers. Not a lot of
saving really.
* each company has a stock of 3 station markers (6 tokens per co), but there are
additional "extra" markers with generic symbols on them which can be used if a
company ever needs more than 3 station markers. This way we could have (say) 20
* 6 for the companies and 8 lots of 5 extra tokens. Total tokens = 120 + 40 =
160.
My main concern with the above ideas is whether the saving in production
material is worth any game-play confusion or inconvenience. Does anyone have any
thoughts on this?

Mike.

For most 18xx games with a "par" price, new shares are bought at the par price
and this determines the company's starting capital, as Martin says.

There are some 18XX games, using incremental capitalisation, in which new shares
are bought at the current share price and the company receives this money. So
companies are capitalised based on the current share price.

In 1880, all shares cost the current share price. There is no "par" price as
such, just a record of the initial share price.

It isn't clear to me whether the capitalisation in 1880 follows the first
approach (based on the initial share price) or the second (based on the current
share price).

I hope this explains the uncertainty that led to my question.

Dave.

How about moving to plastic or other material instead of wood?
Or using "caps or hats" on top of generic wooden tokens.
Alternatively velcro tops.

Another idea would be to have tokens with one company logo on the top and a
different one on the bottom.
