Hi Everyone,
A while ago there was some griping on this about how the TGA runs the 18XX
tournament at Gencon, Origins and Railcon.
Here is what we do now:
There are two tournys at each convention: one for 1830 and one for 18XX.
The 1830 tourney is easy enough: you play a game in one of the preceding
qualifying rounds and that gets you into the final. If we end up with more
than two boards in the final, the person with the greatest overall margin of
victory at their board is the winner. (That is they value over the value of
all the players.
For 18XX your three best place finishes in different 18XX games from
preceding qualifying rounds in both Categories 3 and 4 including 1830 are
combined. (This is all 18XX games) The top four players get first option to
play. Should a qualified player pass on the opportunity to play in this
final, the next person in the rankings becomes qualified. Only games from
Category 4, longer 18XX games, are eligible to be played in the 18XX final
the exact game to be chosen by the players. There is only one final board
for 18XX.
For the games themselves, we have an 18XX slot starting every four or six
hours as the previous slot completes. The shorter games, like 1830, are put
in the 4 hour slots, the longer games, like 1870, are in the 6 hour slots.
In most cases, it is up to the players to decide what game they play. 1830
slots, as they qualify you for the 1830 final, are restricted to 1830, but
there is usually an alternate 18XX slot running concurrently. This means we
have 18XX running continuously all convention long.
As we want as many players to show up as possible to these conventions, we
are asking your input as to what you want to see done with 18XX. Is what we
are doing now good, or do you see changes that could be made? Please let us
know your thoughts soon as we are in the process of submitting the final
schedules to Origins and Gencon in the next couple of weeks.
